Brief Introduction

Taxia is a beautiful and peaceful small village. A rivulet runs smoothly through it, alongside are the Hakka earth buildings where villagers live. Over 50 earth buildings and 30 delicate black brick-made houses scatter in the long and narrow valley. In the morning, you may be waked up either by chirping birds or by the gentle sunlight. It is a good choice for those who are tired of noisy cities and desire peace and nature.

Development of Taxia Village

In 1426 during the Ming Dynasty, the second son of Xiaoyilang, the 9th generation grandson of Zhang Huasun (Clan Zhang’s first ancestor moving to Fujian Province) arrived at the location where today is Taxia Village. Fuxing Lou was built in 1631, followed by another 42 Hakka earth buildings. Now Taxia Village is an administrative region of Shuyang Town.

Featured Buildings

Hakka earth buildings, as an embodiment of Hakka culture, are the typical architecture of Taxia Village. The most ancient earth buildings have a 400-year history. They usually have 3-5 stories, with the ground floor as the kitchen, the second floor as warehouse and the other floors as living rooms and bedrooms. Besides round and square ones, there are earth buildings in varieties of shapes, such as semi-lune.

 Deyuan Tang

Deyuan Tang is one of the well-maintained ancestral hall buildings of China and has been listed in the 6th batch of national major cultural relics. On each side of the front gate stands a big stone drum, chiseled with figures from 24 filial pieties, an ancient Chinese story collection educating people how to serve their parents. On the colorful tiles at the ridge enchased varieties of patterns, including characters from legends, animals indicating auspicious, and beautiful flowers.

There are 24 stone flagpoles in front of Deyuan Tang, each of which is more than 10 meters high. Unique to Hakka culture, they are called Shilong Flagpole. In ancient times, when someone from the village gained good grades in the imperial examinations, villagers would build a stone flagpole to celebrate. The height, base form, and carves on the flagpole would be different based on the degrees and types of achievement.
