Located in the northwest of Hunan Province, Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area is on the magical 30 degrees north latitude which contains countless nature secrets. It consists of four parts, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve and Yangjiajie Scenic Area, with a total area of about 500 square kilometers.
Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area is a new place of interest, which was firstly discovered in the early 1980s and whose scenery is purely natural. The quartz sandstone peak forest here is rare both at home and abroad. There are countless peaks, cliffs and waterfalls, which create a landscape that is unusual in all the world. When people are placed in, they seem to roam in a beautiful and interesting landscape world. In addition, the forest here is flourishing, which provides a good environment for many species. It has become the concentrated distribution area of many rare animals and plants in China.
Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area is known as the flower of life on earth. It was approved by the State Council to build China's first National Forest Park－Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in 1982. In 1988, it was listed as a national key scenic spot. In 1992, it was listed into the World Natural Heritage List. In 2004, it was rated as one of the first batch of the World Geological Park in China. In 2007, it was rated as one of the first batch of national AAAAA level scenic spots.
Due to the fantastic artistic conception of the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, it is the real scene location of the famous movie "Avatar" and the Chinese classic dramas, "Dream of Red Chamber" and "Journey to the West".
On July 17, 2015, Bailong Sightseeing Elevator set a new Guinness World Record－"the highest outdoor elevator". Its maximum running speed has increased from 3 m/s to 5 m/s, and the one-way running time has been shortened from 2minutes to one and a half minutes. Besides, the total capacity of the three elevators has increased to about 6000 people per hour, which means that the Bailong Sightseeing Elevator will end the history that tourists spend too much time on waiting.
On November 14, 2015, the fourth Zhangjiajie Peak Forest Crossing Bicycle Race was held in Wulingyuan with more than 1500 outdoor cyclists from all over the country participated. The competition was fierce and the scene was spectacular.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, with an area of 130 square kilometers, is the first National Forest Park in China. It was featured as a peculiar landform with many unique stone peaks with different shapes and luxuriant trees. It’s said that over 97 percent of the park is covered with various kinds of valuable trees and other plants. Surrounded by mountains, steep slopes and deep gullies, there are many unique scenic spots, such as Yellow Stone Stronghold, Golden Whip Stream and Yuanjiajie Scenic Area.
Among all the scenic spots in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yellow Stone Stronghold is the most famous one. The peak of the stronghold is towering into the sky with great grandeur, which gives people a sense of magnificence. It is said that "if you don't go to Yellow Stone Stronghold, you will go to Zhangjiajie in vain". Located in the central part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, it has an altitude of 1080 meters with an area of 16.5 hectares. In addition, it is honored as the most beautiful viewing platform in Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area.
Another beautiful scenic spot in the forest park is Golden Whip Stream. It is one of the earliest developed scenic spots in the park, with a total length of 7500 meters. Along the stream is the most beautiful scenery of Wulingyuan. After entering the Zhangjiajie Forest Park, walking 300 meters ahead is the entrance of the stream. It gives a full expression of the delicacy and beauty of the landscape in Wulingyuan. Mr. Wu Guanzhong, a famous Chinese painter, once praised it as "a fairy tale world".
Yangjiajie Scenic Area, the last developed core tourist attraction of the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, is adjacent to Tianzi Mountain in the north and Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the east. It covers an area of 34 square kilometers. The scenic area is divided into three major areas, Xiangzhi Stream, Qingfeng Gorge and Hundred Monkey Valley. Visitors from all over the world will lose themselves in its majestic, beautiful and tranquil scenery.
Plant and animal resources of Yangjiajie Scenic Area are very rich. The scenic area is densely vegetated, with a forest coverage rate of 95%. The peak forest here is in the infancy of its evolutionary history. Xiangzhi Stream is located in the east of Yangjiajie Scenic Area, with towering peaks on both sides. Hundred Monkey Valley is the home of macaques and egrets. Groups of macaques haunt the cliffs and valleys, and flocks of egrets inhabit among the green branches and leaves.
Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve is located in the north of Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, adjacent to the mountains and rivers of Suoxi Valley, with a total area of 67 square kilometers. The highest peak of this area is 1262.5 meters above sea level. Tianzi Mountain has several small scenic spots, Helong Park, Yubi Peak, Shentang Bay and so on.
Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve is adjacent to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the west and Tianzi mountain in the north, with a total area of 160 square kilometers. It is in the advanced stage of the evolutionary history of the peak forest. Green mountains and blue rivers here depict a wonderful picture by reflecting each other. Suoxi Valley refers to “a foggy mountain valley” in the local Tujia language, representing its distinctive climatic feature.
Suoxi Valley has an unique geological landform and rich wild animal and plant resources. It is reputed as a pearl in Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area because of its grotesque mountains, beautiful water and secluded cave. Mountains here are not as steep as Zhangjiajie, but they are also towering. Suoxi Valley is composed of several scenic spots, such as Ten-mile Gallery, Yellow Dragon Cave and Baofeng Lake.
The Ten-mile Gallery which is more than ten miles long is the essence of Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve. There is abundant natural scenery on the two sides. Verdant trees, fragrant flowers, strange peaks and stones with various forms create a huge landscape painting hanging side by side on the cliffs. The rocks on the mountain seem to be carved by nature, forming more than 200 stone landscapes that look like human beings, birds and animals. People walk in the gallery as if being in a Chinese landscape painting.
Yellow Dragon Cave, also known as Yellow Dragon Spring, is a typical karst landform, located in the east of Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve. It has a total area of 100,000 square meters with a length of 7.5 kilometers and with a vertical height of 140 meters. It has become a unique tourist cave at home and abroad because of its three-dimensional cave structure, wide dragon palace hall and thousands of splendid stalactites, stalagmites and stone curtains. The stalactite pillars are like crystal jade. The cave is so beautiful and mystery so that it is called "the underground labyrinth".
Baofeng Lake is a large area of water in Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve. It is a tourist attraction with a combination of natural landscape and human folklore in Zhangjiajie, known as "A Classic Lake in World". It is the real shooting place of Water Curtain Cave and Mount Huaguo in the well-known Chinese drama “Journey to the West”.
Baofeng Lake is famous for its unique scenery composed of the high gorge, flat lake surface, Baofeng waterfall and mysterious ancient mountain temples. Its surface is like a clear mirror and surrounded by the peaks. The lake is about 2.5 kilometers long and visitors can be very pleased and satisfied when taking a boat on the lake and when enjoying the great landscape of green hills and blue water.
Take the battery car to the foot of Tianzi Mountain→take the cable car from the foot of Tianzi Mountain to the summit→Helong Park→Yubi Peak→take the battery car to the Yuanjiajie Scenic Area→take the Bailong elevator down to the Ten-mile Gallery

Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area is worth visiting all year round. There are more people in spring and autumn, followed by summer and winter.
Autumn(September to November) is the best time to travel to the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area. Especially in April and October of each year, Zhangjiajie has the most beautiful natural scenery. At that time, different colors of various plants and fruits make the scenic area appear an oil painting and the cave through the mountain also looks very magnificent.
Please notice that there is a big temperature difference between the top and the foot of the mountains. If you go to the mountains in autumn, you'd better take a coat with you.
Zhangjiajie Downtown- Wujiayu Ticket Office:
Take the bus (the special line from downtown to Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area) at the Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station which is near the Railway Station. The whole journey is about 35 kilometers. It takes about 50 minutes and costs 12 yuan. The bus runs every ten minutes. When arriving at the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area Bus Station, you can walk about two kilometers or take bus 1 or 2 (1 yuan/person) to the Wujiayu Ticket Office.
Zhangjiajie Downtown- Forest Park Ticket Office:
Take the bus (the special line from downtown to Zhangjiajie Forest Park) at the Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station which is near the Railway Station. The whole journey is about 30 kilometers. It takes about 45 minutes and costs 12 yuan. The bus runs every ten minutes.
Zhangjiajie Downtown- Yangjiajie Ticket Office:
Take the bus at the Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station to the Tianzi Mountain Town and get off at the Yangjiajie Ticket Office Station. The whole journey is about 40 kilometers. It takes about 70 minutes and costs 11 yuan. The bus runs every 1 hour. Then you can walk about two kilometers or take local vehicles (2 yuan/person) to the Yangjiajie Ticket Office.
Zhangjiajie Downtown- Tianzi Mountain Ticket Office:
Take the bus at the Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station to the Tianzi Mountain Town and get off at Tianzi Mountain Ticket Office Station. The whole journey is about 55 kilometers. It takes about 1.5-2 hours and costs 12 yuan. The bus runs every 1 hour.
