Fuxian Lake is a tourist attraction that combines the function of traveling, sightseeing, scientific research, leisure, and recreation. Situated at the center of Yunnan, Fuxian Lake stretches over three counties, covering an area of 216.6 square kilometers. It is around 60 kilometers away from Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan. Fuxian Lake is the largest lake at the source of the Pearl River with the highest quality freshwater. Its average elevation is 1,722.5 meters. With a average depth of 95.2 meters and a maximum water depth of 158.9 meters, Fuxian Lake is the second deepest freshwater lake in China.
When you take a boat over Fuxian Lake, you will marvel at the beauty of the scene. In the daytime, the lake surface is rippled in a wondrous and ever-changing way. At night, the lake against dim moonlight is especially enchanting. Many literati are fascinated by it in just a glimpse of her beauty. As early as the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Xu Xiake, a famous traveler, eulogized Fuxian Lake in his travel notes.
Fuxian Lake is also well-known as a sports venue. Over 100-kilometer long lakeside road is the best place for lakeside walking, cycling, and self-driving. There is the southwest wind in the north bank of Fuxian Lake all year, which provides excellent weather conditions for windsurfing. A variety of aquatic sports such as diving, canoe and kayak, and sailing boats will bring you the most exciting experience.
Fuxian Lake can be divided into four areas. The east bank area takes the hot springs as the central area. The north bank area is one high-end resort scenic area, including Yueliangwan Wetland Park, Cherry Blossom Valley, and Yuxi Garden Ecological Tourism Demonstration Area. The west bank area includes Luchong Scenic Area and Star Scenic Area, and the south bank area includes Gushan Scenic Area.
Luchong Scenic Area enjoys green hills and clear waters. It is situated in Luchong Village, at the south of Penholder Mountain and faces the Fuxian Lake, with Qilin Hill at the back. Luchong is dotted with many famous attractions, such as Penholder Mountain, Wenchang Palace, Golden Beach, and Biyan Park. The most attractive experience is to appreciate the splendor of sunrise and moonlight. Besides, you can feel the most ancient tradition of catching fish by the water wheel and enjoy the water world by diving in Golden Beach and taking a boat over Rongshuwan.
People regard Luchong as a must-visit place because it not only boasts an attractive landscape but also owns a profound cultural background. In history, Luchong has nurtured generations of literati. The name of “Luchong” originated from “Lvchong”, which means verdant mountains. If you want to appreciate lake views and the mountain scene of Fuxian Lake, Luchong is a highly recommended place.
Fuxian Lake is not only beautiful but also rich in the specialty. The lake is home to some rare fish species. Star Fishing Holes is a good destination for fishing, dining, and recreation. There are over 200 fish holes stretching for miles. Every fish hole is more than 10 meters long, 3 to 4 meters deep. Its bottom is about 0.5 meters wide, leading the water to the lake through a manpower water wheel.
During every fishing season, local farmers will use the water wheels to catch fish, and feast well. Many tourists come here because of its local specialty such as boiled fish in the copper pot and braised rice in the copper pot. It will be a worthwhile trip for you and your family.
Hupanshengshui (literal meaning holy water by the lake) situates at the northeast bank of Fuxian Lake. It is a comprehensive international leisure and tourism resort integrating accommodation, dining, and recreation. It includes Angsana Fuxian Lake Hotel and Yueliangwan Wetland Park. Through an underground tunnel, you will see the Yueliangwan Wetland Park. Situated at the northeast bank of Fuxian Lake, Cherry Blossom Valley is a 200,000 square meters ecological park that integrates tourism, relaxing, old-age caring, leisure, and vacation. At this valley, many rare cherry species can be found here and there. The 2.5-kilometer-long shoreline of the lake is covered with cherry blossoms from March to May. When the breeze blows, the cherry blossoms dance in the air, making the clear and rippling Fuxian Lake look more beautiful. When you enter the valley, you will think that you are entering the world of an oil painting.
The history has that around three million years ago, the crustal movement and the rise of the Himalayas caused a series of water faults and rock corrosion. Many mountains and lakes were formed in Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and Fuxian Lake is one of them. Fuxian Lake is formed in the late Tertiary Period of Geologic Time and is a fault-type deep lake.
On April 23, 2020, the Fuxian Lake Comprehensive Treatment Project is enlisted as one of the National Top 10 Typical Cases of Ecological Valuation.
On November 29, 2020, the 2020 Colorful Yunnan International Granfondo Cycling Festival was held in Fuxian Lake.
On December 25, 2020, the Yunnan Yuxi Fuxian Lake National Wetland Park was approved officially.
