Huxian Farmers Painting originated from local residents and evolved from the folk arts such as paper-cutting, mural, New Year picture, and embroidery in the Guanzhong area, Shaanxi Province. The paintings specifically depict the spectacular scenes of productive labor, the lively festival scenes, and the gorgeous folk customs in the countryside.
Huxian Farmers Painting was born in the 1950s. Since the 1970s, it has gradually spread from Huyi District (previously named Huxian or Hu County) to the whole country and even to the world. Huyi District has also become one of the most influential farmers painting cradles in China, which is regarded as a typical example of China’s rural cultural construction. In 1988, Hu County was officially named by the Ministry of Culture as the “Cradle of Modern Chinese Farmers Painting”.
Over the past four decades, more than 30,000 Huxian farmers paintings have been created. Specifically, more than 1,500 of these have been published in national journals, and 4,500 have been exhibited in 48 countries and regions upon invitation.
Huxian Farmers Painting enjoys a long history. It complements each other with local operas, popular festive activities, dragon lanterns, and other folk arts.
The Huxian farmers paintings were produced as early as 1958. In those days, the government encouraged the villagers to create while working and actively carried out the socialist cultural movement.
From 1970 to 1980, under the guidance of professional artists, the artistic style of Huxian Farmers Painting was basically defined within the scope of traditional Chinese paintings and New Year paintings.
In October 1973, the “Huxian Farmers Painting Exhibition” was held in the National Art Museum of China and well embraced in all aspects. In 1974, the Central News Film Studio again shot the feature film “Farmers in Huxian County Painting the New World”.
From 1974 to 1977, the Ministry of Culture of the State Council and the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries organized exhibitions of Huxian Farmers Painting all over the world.
Huxian Farmers Painting is primarily based on characters, animals, flowers, and birds, showing the beautiful natural rural scenery of Huyi District.
They have obvious regional characteristics, with gaudy and showy colors, exaggerated descriptions, profound themes, and concise and bright styles. Thus, they can depict the vivid farm life, and the rapturous festive celebration. The characteristics of modern folk art are fully embodied.
Huxian Farmers Painting boasts novel artistic styles and various kinds. Throughout the long-term creation activities of farmer artists, the following art forms of the paintings have already been formed, including murals, New Year pictures, decorative paintings, comic strips, prints, paper cuts, etc.
Huxian Farmers Painting Museum is the first and largest of its kind at the county level in China. The museum covers an area of 7,338 square meters, with a building area of 2,811 square meters. It has eight exhibition halls, displaying more than 500 pieces of works.
Huxian Farmers Painting Museum was built in 1976. It is located in the south of the middle section of Huazhan Street, Huyi District, Shaanxi Province, about 29 kilometers southwest of Xi’an. The paintings on display are renowned at home and abroad for their strong local cultural characteristics, plain regional characteristics, and distinctive local characteristics.
