Located on the bank of Moshui Lake-a tourist area, in Hanyang district, Wuhan City, Wuhan Zoo is a semi-natural animal world. Surrounded by water on three sides, verdant trees, clusters of flowers and pleasant scenery, it has a unique geographical environment. Moreover, it is an ideal habitat for wild animals.
The whole park covers an area of 640,000 square meters. It features the Shennongjia(an forest in the northwest of Hubei province) golden monkeys and wetland birds. Wuhan Zoo is an urban zoo integrating wildlife protection, scientific research, animal science education, and entertainment. It is the Youth Science and Technology Education Base and the Wildlife Protection Education Base in China.
Wuhan Zoo is divided into east, north, and southwest zones. The east zone is a water and land recreation area, the north area is for animal shows and a wildlife zoo, and the southwest zone is a semi-natural wildlife exhibition area. In July 1978, it was confirmed by the National Construction Committee that Wuhan Zoo was listed in the Eight Key Zoos in China.
In 1975, the Wuhan Zoo Preparation Office was established.
In 1985, Wuhan Zoo was officially opened to the public.
In 2011, the Wetland Bird Zone of Wuhan Zoo was officially opened to the public.
The Wetland Bird Zone of Wuhan Zoo is located in the southeast corner of the zoo, covering an area of more than 120,000 square meters, exhibiting about 1,400 rare birds of 60 species (excluding those that came to settle in the wild). The zone is a paradise for birds, surrounded by clear waters, lush forests, mountain and stone pavilions.
Its layout is exquisite and the wetland bird exhibition area with unique lakeside characteristics makes full use of natural resources. The zone has a national first-class ecological landscape and design concept and is famous for wading birds, swimming birds, climbing birds, and songbirds.
The Marine Animal Show Hall is colorful and unique. Due to the barrier of the mountain, it can give people a sudden and unexpected surprise. Besides, it embodies the extensive and profound Chinese garden culture. The Marine Animal Show Hall is composed of the main hall and the aquarium viewing exhibition area. The main hall resembles a football field with an oval shape, a half-sided grandstand, a half-sided stage, and a large pool in the middle.
The stand can accommodate about 1,000 spectators. There are the sun-shading and rain-proof ceiling, and chairs in strips, which is more suitable for public entertainment venues, especially for free show halls, compared with one person and one seat in the beast show hall.
The stage is used for marine animals to perform on the shore. On both sides of the stage are the sea animals bedroom (sea pool) and management rooms. The large pool in the middle is slightly smaller than a standard swimming pool and is full of clear fresh water, which is used for sea animals to perform in the water. Under the stage, there is a set of specially advanced water purification devices that are invisible to visitors to ensure the health of the sea animals and the quality of the performance.
The hall is mainly used for the performances of sea lions and seals. The programs mainly include “welcome greetings”, “lifesaving”, “single top ball”, “double top ball”, “kissing with actors”, “drilling circle”, “rolling ball”, “roller”, “walking upside down”, “learning to walk”, “curtain call” and so on.
The garden aquarium viewing area is designed by a series of large-scale luxury exhibition boxes, which respectively exhibit marine and tropical fish such as sharks, sea tigers, seahorses, sea monsters, tortoiseshells, and so on, covering more than 200 species.
The new Panda Pavilion covers an area of about 5,400 square meters, with a venue area of 1,400 square meters, an outdoor activity area of 1,800 square meters, and surrounding supporting ecological ponds and other landscape areas of 2,200 square meters.
After visiting the inner exhibition hall, visitors can see the panda’s “back garden” through the popular bridge. The outdoor playground is covered with vegetation and big trees. Many exquisite and interesting “toys” are provided.
In the popular science exhibition hall, with the growth story of the panda “Dudu”, the popular science picture of the panda is shown to tourists. You can hear three types of sounds of pandas by pressing the button, and you can also smell the panda’s real smell of bamboo-scented dung, compare the height difference with the panda, and find the secret of the field research station.
Besides, at the exit of the large exhibition hall, there is a miniature version of the panda for visitors to experience and feel the pandas’ living environment.
