Located in Wuhan, Hubei, Wuhan University is built to cultivate talents for the country. The university is surrounded by East Lake. With an attractive landscape and great academic environment, it is known as “the most beautiful campus” in China.
The university is blessed with a profound history and palatial architecture of elegance and spectacle, which can date back to 1893 in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912).
In 1893, Governor-general of Hu-Guang(Hu’nan province and Hubei province in the old days), Zhang Zhidong stood for building a school (Ziqiang Institute) to train talents.
It was renamed National Wuchang Normal University in 1923 and National Wuchang University in 1924.
In 1928, the university was renamed National Wuhan University.
In 1949, it was renamed Wuhan University.
In 2000, Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University were merged to form the new Wuhan University.
Built in 1930-1931, the old dormitory is one of the early campus buildings. It is well designed and composed of four dormitory buildings, which are connected via three Roman column arches.
The main body of the building adopts granite gray as the main color, demonstrating a sense of simplicity and elegance. Its entrance is equipped with magnificent multi-layered steps (also known as 100-step stairs). Standing on the roof of the building, a panoramic view of Cherry Blossom Garden can be commanded. Thus, the old dormitory is also called the Cherry Blossom Castle.
Located on the central axis of Wuhan University, Wuhan University Library was originally built in 1917, covering an area of 41,925 square meters. It was designed by a famous American architect F. H. Kales, integrating building features of the East and the West. The interior of the library owns western-style corridors and stone arches. The exterior is the palace-style roof glazed with green tiles, showing an ancient oriental charm.
As we all know, cherry blossom at Wuhan University is very popular. However, have you noticed that there was no cherry blossom before? In 1939, Wuhan was captured by Japanese forces and they planted some cherry trees to relieve homesickness. As the cherry blossoms have become historical evidence of the Japanese aggression against China, they have been kept till now.
