Located in the heartland of Hankou District, Wuhan, Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street is billed as “the First Pedestrian Street in the World” due to its total length. With an array of various buildings, it is considered as a building museum of the 20th century.
It is 1600 meters long and 10 to 25 meters wide, with a total area of 40,000 square meters. It is home to not only relics of western buildings in the 1930s, but also numerous department and fashion brand stores. It is also a great place for people to discover and taste various and delicious Chinese food.
In the late Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), the section of Jianghan Road from Yanjiang Avenue to Hualou Street belonged to the British Concession. The street was named Taiping Street (meaning peace) in 1861.
In 1906, Liu Xinsheng, referred to as a “king of the land”, reclaimed land from ponds along Jianghan Road, gradually forming Xinsheng Road.
In 1927, Taiping Street and Xinsheng Road were renamed Jianghan Road.
As a beginning of Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street, built in 1924, Jianghan Customs House is located at the junction between Yanjiang Avenue and Jianghan Road Pedestrian Street. It was once a core building of Hankou concession and now is one of the landmarks in Wuhan.
It covers an area of 1,499 square meters and adopts English architectural forms with a four-layer main building, a bell-house, and a semi-basement. The bell-house has five layers, 23.1 meters in height.
Enter from Jianghan Customs House→ Jianghan Customs Museum→ Ancient Building Groups→ Water Tower→ Jianghan Beach→ Snack Street→ Exit from Jiefang Avenue.
Take bus 520, 402, 608, 801, or 313, and get off at the Jianghan Fourth Road Station.
Take Metro Line 1 or Line 2, and get off at the Xunli Gate and exit C.
