Located in the Central Cultural District of Wuhan, the 1500-meter-long Chu River and Han Street is built along the Chu River. It is extolled as “the First Commercial Street of China”, covering a building area of 3.4 million square meters.
Its main buildings adopt the architectural style of the Republic of China era (1912-1949), with red and gray plain brick walls, black-painted doors, and old wood-painted windows decorated. Paved with green bricks, the Chu River and Han Street integrates stylish elements of modern and European-style buildings, showing beauty in harmony.
With various street food and fashion brand stores, it provides a platform for tourists to go shopping and enjoy diversified styles of buildings. Certainly, the evening is the best time to visit. Blessed with commercial and cultural features, the Chu River and Han Street has been billed as a modern “Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival” (清明上河图).
At the beginning of 2010, Wuhan Municipal Government signed a cooperation agreement with Wanda Group, marking the official launch of the Wuhan Central Cultural District Project.
In 2011, the construction of the Chu River and Han Street as part of the project was completed and opened to the public.
Opened in 2013, Madame Tussaud’s on the Chu River and Han Street covers an area of 1,552 square meters and is the second exhibition hall in Chinese mainland. As the highest-level wax museum in the world, Madame Tussaud’s in Wuhan is home to numerous wax figures of world celebrities.
Entering the Han Street Memorial Archway, visitors will be attracted by the statue of Qu Yuan (a famous and patriotic poet of the Chu State in the Warring States Period), coupled with other statues of famed people in history, who tell visitors many beautiful and touching stories.
Located on the east side of the Zhi Yin Square, Han Street Drama Stage is free for everyone. The stage adopts a modeled architectural style of a wooden structure, with the most advanced LED screen. On holidays, traditional Chinese operas are performed publicly.
There is a story about the name of the Chu River and Han Street, which takes its name from a literary quotation “the border of two opposing powers of Chu and Han” (楚河汉界). As it was built along the Chu River and made use of Chinese partial tone, the name Chu River and Han Street was naturally obtained.
