Overview of China House

China House

China House, which is one of the landmark buildings in Tianjin, is a French style house decorated with tens of thousands of antique porcelain pieces.

The building was designed by Zhang Lianzhi, the owner of the China House. The porcelain and pieces used span from Han Dynasty to Qing Dynasty. Almost all kinds of official and civilian porcelains in China can be seen here.

More than 20 tons of crystal stone and agate, over 4,000 pieces of ancient porcelain, and more than 300 stone sculptures in previous dynasties were used in the construction, which is known as a priceless “Museum of Ancient Chinese Porcelain”.

The China House, formerly a small French-style building with a history of 100 years, was built in the late 1920s. It is a 4-story building with brick and wood structure. It is a European mansion with Italian verandas, with a building area of 4,200 square meters. The house is the former residence of Huang Rongliang, a modern Chinese diplomat. Huang Rongliang was born in 1876 in Wuwei, Anhui. He graduated from Nanjing Huiwen Academy and later became a professor there. He then went to the United States to study, first at Baker University, then at Columbia University.

In 2000, Zhang Lianzhi (the owner of China House) spent 30 million yuan to buy this century-old small house and decided to turn it into a porcelain building and to construct a monument of porcelain to carry forward the porcelain culture of the Chinese nation.

In 2005, when Zhang Lianzhi attended the Asia-Europe Finance Ministers’ Meeting in Tianjin, he went to the Hua Yun Museum for dinner and was amazed by a wall inlaid with ancient porcelain fragments. Inspired by this, he took out all the treasures he had collected for many years, such as the Tri-colored glazed pottery of Tang Dynasty, the Imperial kilns of Song and Yuan dynasties and the treasures of Ming and Qing dynasties, turning them into unparalleled architectural materials.

On September 3rd, 2007, China House was formally opened to the public and immediately became a landmark building in Tianjin.

On September 23rd, 2010, the Huffington Post selected the world’s top 15 museums with unique design, including the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Denver Art Museum and the Pompidou Art Center. Among them, China House was the only Chinese museum on the list.

Features of China House

When you get close to China House, you will be overwhelmed by its gorgeous colors, quaint atmosphere and huge momentum that will shock the soul. Here is the world of porcelain. The whole house is covered with ancient porcelain pieces from various historical periods and with different origin, emitting a long, charming luster, which makes you stand for a long time and feel it's beyond description.

This is Zhang Lianzhi’s elaboration. From the sunblind ceramics decoration to the ancient ceramics murals inside, every detail is almost perfect, and every scene is worth lingering. When you, as it were, observe the worldly unique house, you will find that the language is so pale, because no words could tell its beauty.

In particular, the porcelain dragon hovering over the house is 768 meters long, 80 centimeters wide, winding and dancing, with spectacular momentum. The dragon took more than 160 days and used more than 8 million pieces of ancient porcelain, making it the longest ancient porcelain dragon in the world. Zhang named the unique, curvy dragon “Eastern Mermaid”, which hovers from the roof to the ground and from the ground to the top of the wall. It is not only a symbol of the Chinese nation, but also a symbol of veritable will of today's China standing in the forest of the world.
