Located in the most prosperous area in downtown Shanghai, the main gate of the Shanghai People’s Park is located at No.231 Nanjing West Road. The park is adjacent to Nanjing West Road to the north, Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and People’s Square to the south, Huangpi North Road to the west, and Xizang Middle Road to the east.
The Name of the park was given by the mayor Chen Yi at that time. In 2000, it carried out large-scale reconstruction and took on a new look. It has an area of 10 hectares.
In 1892, Shanghai’s first swimming pool in the northeast of the Happy Horse Hall was built by the Public Concession Swimming Association.
In 1950, after liberation, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government issued a document on March 6, 1950, clearly stipulating that the racetrack hall should be designated as a green space and no buildings should be built that would interfere with the greening. In the spring of 1988, 15 thousand square meters of green space were excavated at the east side of No.1 Gate due to subway construction.
In March 1995, the project of Metro Line 1 was completed, and 12,000 square meters of green space were returned, and 3,000 square meters of green space was still borrowed. All the green land returned has been planted with trees and flower beds.
The Antarctic Stone is located in the center of the park. It was collected by the first Chinese Antarctic research team on George Island on February 21, 1982.It was located in the park on February 21, 1985. The stone is dark brown, 1.7 meters high, oval in shape, engraved with Song Richang's (a calligrapher) inscription “The Antarctic stone”(Nan Ji Shi).
On the main line of the park is the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art. It is Shanghai’s first private art museum focusing on contemporary art and design.
The museum has successfully held large-scale art exhibitions such as “Nostalgia -- East Asian Contemporary Art Exhibition”, “Life Exercise -- 2012 Architectural Space Art Exhibition” and “Dior Spirit Exhibition”. These exhibitions and exchanges have won support and preference of many young people.
Lotus Pond, located in the western center of the park, consists of two connected ponds of irregular shape. It has a total area of 3,300 square meters. The east pool is planted with lotus, west pool with goldfish. The plants are here and there, such as weeping willows.
There is a pavilion in the south of the Lotus Pond. There is a reinforced concrete structure platform in front of the pavilion, with water on three sides and a guardrail on the edge of the platform, covering an area of 28 square meters. There is a photography department inside the pavilion.
The matchmaking corner in The People's Park was gradually established in the 21st century.
With the accelerated pace of life in Shanghai, more and more white-collar workers begin to reduce their time with people. So, they gradually become unmarried young people of older age.
Many parents of outstanding unmarried young people gradually begin to find suitable partners for their children. The elderly people who exercise in the People’s Park begin to communicate with each other and look for marriage partners for their children.
Since many foreign tourists will visit the park, some college students and English learners often come to have conversations with foreign tourists to improve their oral English.
It gradually forms some activities of regular communication in the park every Sunday. The English corner of the People’s Park has always been going on. There are school-age children, primary and middle school students, college students, foreign tourists and a group of old friends, ranging from 6 years old to 80 years old. It has become a famous cultural scene in the park.
Located in the northeast of the park, the Monument was built to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the May 30th Movement. The foundation was laid on May 30, 1985, and the monument was inaugurated on May 30, 1990.
The monument, consisting of a stainless-steel body, a bronze statue and three granite blocks, covers an area of 4,000 square meters.
