The Oriental Pearl Radio & Television Tower is a multi-cylinder structure, with the wind acting as the main factor controlling the main structure. The trunk is composed of three hollow pillars with a diameter of 9 meters and a height of 287 meters. The pillars are connected by beams 6 meters high. At the 93m elevations, it is supported by three inclined columns with a diameter of 7m, which intersect the ground at a large angle. The building has 425 foundation piles into the ground for 12 meters. Three steel structure balls of thousands of tons are suspended at the height of 112 meters, 295 meters and 350 meters respectively. The reinforced concrete building is supported by three inclined supports nearly 100 meters high.
The tower body of the TV tower has strong stability, and its design seismic standard is “level 7 does not move, level 8 does not crack, level 9 does not fall”. In addition, the building has good wind resistance. The Oriental Pearl TV & Radio Tower is the first major project in the Pudong district after its opening up. Within 10 years of its completion, it has hosted 295 foreign heads of state, held nearly 100 important world-class conferences and held more than 300 large-scale events, and become an important window for Shanghai to promote itself to the outside world.

On August 25, 1983, Zou Fanyang, director of The Shanghai Broadcasting Bureau, wrote to Wang Daohan, mayor of Shanghai, Ruan Chongwu, deputy mayor, and leaders of the State Radio and Television Department respectively, and proposed the idea of using foreign capital to build a new television tower for the first time.
On July 30, 1991, the ground-breaking ceremony of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower was held.
On December 14, 1993, the 350-meter structure of the Oriental Pearl Radio and Television Tower was capped.
On 1st May 1994, the steel mast of the transmitting antenna was installed.

The circular glass corridor extending from the tower is 2.1 meters wide and 150 meters long. The ground glass is paved with three layers of super white safety glass.
The widest part of the sightseeing corridor is 3.6 meters and the narrowest part is 3.2 meters, among which the widest part of transparent glass is 2.15 meters and the narrowest part is 1.75 meters. The whole transparent sightseeing ring corridor covers an area of about 415 square meters.
