The Mountain of Flowers and Fruits Scenic Area is 90 kilometers from the ancient capital city, Luoyang. Covering an area of 4,810 hectares, Mountain of Flowers and Fruits Scenic Area includes four parts: Yueding Scenery Area, Huashan Misheng Area, Shiyuanqiang Natural Reserve, and Qiyu Waterfall Area. It has more than 80 peaks, and over 200 natural attractions. Its main peak is at an altitude of 1,831.8 meters. Yueding Peak in the east is at an elevation of 1,643 meters, with 87.4% forest coverage. The average annual temperature is 14.4℃, and the highest temperature is 26℃ in summer.
Various majestic mountain peaks and grotesque rocks can be seen everywhere in the scenic area when one enters here. Waterfalls hang in high mountains, and clouds like sheep float in the sky, making it ethereal. The animal landscape, natural landscape, and cultural landscape are integrated into one, which makes it a good reputation of “majesty prevailing over the Five Famous Mountains and beauty being second to none in Central Plains”.
Once entering the Mountain of Flowers and Fruits on summer days, travelers feel cool. The rationale behind it may be that the place lies at the dividing line between the North Temperate Zone and the Subtropical Zone, giving it four distinct seasons. The scenery in each season has its own characteristics. The various flowers bloom in spring, making the place colorful; the weather is cool in summer; red leaves hang all over the trees in autumn; the spectacular landscape — the iced trees and the snow-covered mountains, always makes visitors spontaneously burst into cheers at its beauty.
The precipitation of the place is adequate, so vegetation here is extravagant. The trees are characterized by their shapes; some are like green umbrellas and some are like fans. Pine woods here are scattered, among which many famous ancient trees are spanning hundreds of years.
Because of its exceptional natural environment, there are plenty of animals and plants. The number of explored plants reaches 1,840 species, and animals over 1,000 species, among which over 200 species of vertebrates have been found. They are very rare, including leopard, musk deer, silver fox, and civet cat. All above mentioned belong to the national key protective animals. These rare animals add much vitality and rustic charm to the place.
Its pleasant climate and special geography surrounded by mountains make it a natural oxygen bar. It has become a summer resort that numerous people will choose for holidays. In 1993, it was approved as a national forest park by the Ministry of Forestry. In 2000, it was approved as one of the top ten tourist attractions of Luoyang.
The Mountain of Flowers and Fruits was also called Nvji Mountain, Guyao Mountain, and Huagu Mountain in ancient times. Its main peak, Nvji Peak has a reputation of “one peak better than three rivers”. It has a long history, and its name has been spread far and wide. It was the place where Taoism was disseminated in Wei and Jin dynasties. It was shrined as a celestial mountain in Sui and Tang dynasties. Many famous poets in ancient China visited here, like Hanyu, Bai Juyi, Li He, and Liu Yuxi in the Tang Dynasty, and Gu Da and Tang Bohu in the Ming Dynasty. There are still many ancient poems depicting the place, which were written by literates.
It is the place appearing earliest in an ancient book before the book, The Journal to the West, was finished. Its special customs and legendary stories about the journal to the West give original sources to the series of novels about the journal to the West. It not only reflects the general public’s will to exterminate violence and bullying but also expresses their hope for a happy life. The book is a treasure of the Chinese nation.
