As one of the famous lamaseries in Lijiang, Yunnan Province, Yufeng Temple is located at the southern foot of Yulong Snow Mountain, Lijiang, Yunnan. It was built in 1700 during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). there once had been nine courtyards at its largest scale in history, and the main hall as well as upper and lower courtyards are reserved up to this day.
The temple is surrounded by dense pine and cypress trees with birds singing, and there is spring water gurgling through the meantime. The whole scenery is beautiful and picturesque, leading tourists to an interesting and quiet world.
Although the temple is small in size, there is a renowned camellia at home and abroad in it. The camellia, nearly 500 years old, is grafted into a whole with two different varieties of camellia. As it blooms 20,000 to 30,000 flowers each year, it is named “Wan Duo Hua Cha” (tens of thousands of camellia in Chinese) and hailed as “The King of Camellia”. During the warm days of spring all the flowers bloom, thousands of camellia bloom, like the gorgeous red clouds, reflecting the whole temple. Tourists from all over the country are rushing to take pictures.
The main hall of Yufeng Temple consists of a gate tower, a worship hall and two tigers, and is characterized by a courtyard layout, which is harmonious and symmetrical. The four Chinese characters “苍芝荫玉” on the top of the main hall were inscribed by Kong Jixin, a descendant of Confucius who served as the prefect of Lijiang during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty.
Facing east, the main hall is 16.3 meters wide, and has a total depth of 12.6 meters. It is of an architectural style of the Qing Dynasty with double eaves on the top. The ridge is decorated with treasure tops, and the two ends decorated with auspicious animals in Chinese culture.
Four golden pillars are engraved with dragon patterns inside the main hall. The Tantric Buddha sitting in the palace is painted on the top of the octagonal sunk panel, and twenty Buddha statues are painted on the crossbeam.
The camellia in the temple, nearly 500 years old, is derived from a touching love story. According to the legend, there was a competent Naxi hunter who often haunted in the snowy peaks and wild forests. One day, he met a girl from the Yi nationality who came to herd here. They fell in love with each other and pledged to get married. However, there was a rule that the local people were not allowed to marry foreign clans. They were forced to break up and were regarded as renegades by the heads of the two clans. Thus, they decided to elope. Yet, when they sun to the forests named Yufeng, they were still found by the horse team of the tribes. Finally, they had no choice but to jump into the fire. After a spring rain, two camellia plants grew, leaning against each other, and gradually became a big camellia with two hearts linked together.
