Gansu Provincial Museum is a large-scale comprehensive museum in Gansu province. The museum has an area of more than 28,000 square meters in which the exhibition area is more than 13,000 square meters.
 

Gansu Provincial Museum has more than 350,000 relics, including historical relics, modern cultural relics, ethnic cultural relics, fossils and specimens. Gansu Provincial Museum has become the main front for the public to carry out science popularization and education.
 

It has been selected as the national patriotism education base and the national science education base. In October 2018, it was named “National Primary and Middle School Students Research and Learning Practice Education Base”.
 

Since the establishment of Gansu Provincial Museum, it has acquired more than 82,000 pieces through archaeological excavation, collection and donation. Among them, 744 pieces are first-class products (16 pieces of them are national treasures).

The basic exhibits are Gansu historical relics, Jiayuguan Wei-Jin Fresco Tomb, Yellow River Ancient Elephant, Natural Wealth of Gansu and Gansu Revolutionary Cultural Relics Exhibition.
 

The Silk Road has its unique exhibition hall which is on the second floor and is the essence of the whole museum. The treasure of the museum, Bronze Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow which is the symbol of ancient China post and postmaster painting bricks are all here.
 

The outside structure of the Gansu Museum is like a mountain with five floors in the middle and three floors in the two wings. The exhibition hall is at back and a circular lecture hall is in the end. On both sides of the exhibition hall are 4 meters wide cloisters.
 

The building was designed by Soviet experts in a unique style.

In 1939, the Chinese and English Gengzi Indemnity Board organized the Gansu Science Education Center. It was renamed National Gansu Science Education Center in1943. In 1950, it was renamed Northwest People’s Science Museum. This building was officially named Gansu Provincial Museum in 1956.
 

The new exhibition building of Gansu Museum was repaired and opened in 2006. The new exhibition building of museum covers an area of 28,000 square meters, including 7,600 square meters of storage area for collections and about 9,000 square meters of exhibition area.

 Gansu Colored Pottery Exhibition Hall

This exhibition hall shows Dadiwan culture, Yangshao culture, Majiayao culture and Bronze Age culture, among which the most attractive pottery is the wide-band grain with three-legged pottery pot.

It has more than 420 cultural relics that systematically reflect the ancient Silk Road, including northern grassland cultural bronzes, bronze galloping horses, the Han and Tang silks, Buddhist statues, gold and silver vessels and other wonderful heritages.

Taking the evolution of life on the earth as the main line, a large number of ancient fossil specimens were found in Gansu Province. Among them they are the Earth Hall, the Hall of Marine, the Dinosaur Hall and the Hall of Ancient Elephants of the Yellow River.
 

This part introduced various fossils discovered in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic in the evolution and geological period of earth and life, as well as their living environment and relevant knowledge.

 

How to Get to Gansu Provincial Museum

 By Bus

Take bus 1, 18, 31, 32, 50, 53, 58, 106, 129 and get off at Qilihe Station, and then walk west about 5 minutes.

Take bus 1, 5, 14, 18, 31, 32, 108, 109, 129 and get off at Xizhan Shizi Station, and then walk east about 10 minutes.

If you go to Gansu Provincial Museum from the center of Lanzhou, it takes about 20 minutes (22 yuan).

If you go to Gansu Provincial Museum from the Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport, it takes about 1hour (140 yuan).

If you go to Gansu Provincial Museum from the Lanzhou West Train Station, it takes about 10 minutes (12 yuan).

The museum is not closed on weekends, but the staff needs a break, so it is uniformly closed on Mondays.
