Yunnan Stone Forest scenic spot, located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Kunming city, Yunnan Province, is 78 kilometers away from the provincial capital Kunming. This scenic spot is worth visiting and people can come for a visit anytime in the whole year.
The Stone Forest boasts numerous small scenic spots, such as the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests(also known as the Lizijing Stone Forest), Naigu Stone Forest, Zhiyun Cave, the Long Lake, the Moon Lake, Qifeng Cave, and the Dadieshui Waterfall.
The Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, also known as the Lizijing Stone Forest, covers an area of 12 square kilometers. Namely, when people mention the stone forests, they usually refer to the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests. The stone forests are famous for its oddly shaped stones, some of which are elegant and some are rugged, and each is lifelike with its distinguishing characteristics. The peaks of these stones stand like a forest.
As people pass by them, they will be amazed at the natural stone masterpieces and the intricate stone formations such as the shapes of cones, pagodas, and mushrooms as well as animals, plants, and even human figures.
Naigu Stone Forest, covering an area of 10 square kilometers, is 8 kilometers northeast of the Greater and Lesser Stone Forest. If you want to get away from the tourist crowd, this is a good choice. Like the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests, Naigu Stone Forest also has a lot of odd stones with different formations. It has already been included in the World Heritage site as part of the South China Karst.
Long Lake, which is located in the village of Weize, is surrounded by mountains. The lake looks like a slim girl and it is also called “Hidden Lake” because it is hidden in the green mountains and few visitors come to visit it. With an area of 3.94 square kilometers, the Long Lake is an entertainment and leisure resort for camping, recreation, water sports, enjoying and participating in folk dance performances.
The Dadieshui Waterfall scenic area is in the southwest of Shilin County, and it is 27 kilometers away from the Greater and Lesser Stone Forests. The source of the Dadieshui Waterfall is a branch of the Nanpan River.
The Dadeishui Waterfall scenic spot includes the great stack waterfall, the small stack waterfall, the immortal cave, the white pigeon garden, and so on. The half waterfall garden, located in the middle of the mountain, is the best place to watch the Dadieshui Waterfall. There are hundreds of steps circling between the cliffs. Here you can feel the power and beauty of the waterfall.
Zhiyun Cave is the earliest construction that has been developed. It has a history of about 400 years. The stalactites inside the cave seem like Ganoderma and colorful clouds, so the cave was called Zhiyun Cave. Tourists will have a good view to appreciate the scene because the lighting equipment can be provided.
Qifeng Cave is located 5 kilometers northwest of Shilin and surrounded by a stone forest. The stones are oddly-shaped. Next to the Qifeng Cave, there is a huge stone standing alone like the guardian of it.
Every Year from August to November, when the earth sucks up enough rain, it’s common to see that the roaring cold wind, weeds, and dust fly in the air. Besides, people can hear the sound of running water instead of the drip of water. After a few minutes of calmness, the cave inhales the wind, flowers, etc. to its entrance, thus forming a marvelous spectacle.
According to legend, Ashima is a beautiful and able girl. Aheige, a brave young man of wisdom, grew up with Ashima and they fell in love with each other. Usually, there would be a hateful male in the normal love story routine. Indeed, the man was the son of local chieftain. He was attracted by the beauty and charm of Ashima so he went to the girl’s family and proposed. Undoubtedly, he was refused. After that, he was determined to rob Ashima away forcibly.
Aheige knew about it. He climbed over 49 mountains and hurried back to save Ashima from a distant pasture. When he got home, Ashima had been taken away for three days. After several twists and turns. Ashima was finally rescued. It is always more difficult for a hero to save the beauty than Tang’s monk to get scriptures. Later, they rode on their way home happily.
Love story is always not smooth. As they were walking, a wild wind blew, dark clouds rolled in the sky and thunder rumbled all over the fields. A storm was approaching, they had to get off the horse. However, they can not see each other in the dark and finally they got lost. After the flood receded gradually, Ashima and Aheige met again. However, they totally lost their direction. When they were worrying, a little bee came, buzzing towards them, so they followed the bee to find their home. The bee led them into the wet and slippery stone forest. Ashima grasped a stone to protect herself from falling, only to find herself stuck to the cliff and never get down. She had to say to Aheige sadly, “Ahei, Ahei, save me quickly. Try to find the white pig and white rooster for the cliff god and then I will be saved.”
He wiped off his tears, sad and anxious, and went over 49 mountains, 81 rivers, finally found a white rooster. However, through the nine villages, he cannot find a white pig. He had no choice but to find a black pig and went to the mountain to dig a basket of white mud. He made a slurry of mud and put it on the black pig to make a white pig, so that he had the white rooster and white pig.
Due to tiredness, when he climbed the last mountain and was ready to meet Ashima happily, he fell asleep. Unfortunately, it began to rain heavily and the rain poured him out of his dream. When he went to see the pig, the black pig’s white mud had been washed away by the rain.
He can not honor the cliff god and Ashima also can not be saved. He was so regretful that he cried bitterly to beg the god. However, the god did not let Ashima go, leaving her stuck on the cliff forever. Over a long period of time, under the continuous erosion of the rain, Ashima has become a stone in the Stone Forest of Yunnan. The water in the Yuniao Pool next to Ashima is the rainwater that washed the black pig.
The Stone Forest scenic spot is worth visiting all year round. As an outdoor area, tourists had better avoid visiting on rainy days. It is necessary to check the weather forecast before departure. The rainy season here lasts from May to October.
