In 1980, Li Zhaoxiang, a farmer in Guandu District, Kunming, planted chrysanthemum seedlings. After the flowers bloomed, he tied them into a bouquet of 5-6 branches with strips of palm leaves, put them in a bucket, and carried them by bicycle to Kunming City to sell them, earning more than 10 yuan a day. When selling flowers on the campus of Yunnan Agricultural University, he got acquainted with Peng Zengsheng, associate professor of the school’s Horticulture Department, who taught Li Zhaoxiang the way of planting gladiolus, freesia, and iris. At that time, a single branch of gladiolus could be sold for 30 cents, which was not a small business and caused a sensation in the local.
In 1983, for the income of selling flowers was much higher than growing vegetables, local villagers followed suit, and then flower cultivation mushroomed in Dounan. With the expansion of planting scale, flower farmers no longer carried flowers to Kunming city with carrying poles and baskets, but they sold flowers in the village market as if they were selling vegetables along the road, thus forming the earliest “Dounan Flower Street”, which was just about 50 meters long.
In 1995, the Dounan Flower Market, which covered an area of more than 8,000 square meters, was established so that villagers no longer had to peddle flowers on the street.
In March 2015, Kunming International Flower Industrial Park “Dounan Flower World” was finished and put into use. Many florists moved into this new market from the old market, marking the farewell to the insufficient old space and welcome to more advanced trading patterns.
Nowadays, flowers from the Kunming Dounan Flower Market have been exported to more than 40 countries and regions, and the market has become the only fresh cut flower trading market in the world that integrates four trading modes of electronic auction, counterparty trading, electronic unified settlement, and e-commerce. Seven out of every ten flowers in China come from Donan. Dounan Flower Market is viewed as a bellwether of flower sales in China and even Asia.
The discounter, located on the 1st and 2nd Floor of Hall 2, follows the theme of Yunnan’s unique animal, peacock, showing a vivid landscape style.
