Qianfo Mountain, as one of the three famous scenic spots in Jinan City, is situated in the south of the city and is 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) away from the center of Jinan. It was called Li Shan in ancient times and was also called Shun Tilling Mountain because Shun(an Emperor) used to till at the foot of the mountain when he was not a king.
The name of Qianfo Mountain can be traced back to the Sui Dynasty. In the early Sui Dynasty, Buddhism prevailed in Shandong Province. Devout believers chiseled a large number of statues of Buddha on the rocks of the mountain. After that, the Thousand-Buddha Temple was erected and the mountain was named Qianfo Mountain (Qianfo means thousands of Buddhas).
On September 5, 2016, four scenic spots in Qianfo Mountain scenic area were successfully announced as cultural relics protection units by the Shandong Province government.
Thousand-Buddha Temple, as the main building of Qianfo Mountain, was founded in the Sui Dynasty and was expanded and renamed as Xingguo Temple in the Tang Dynasty. With cliffs in the south, the temple is located at half way of the mountain. Standing in the north of the mountain, you can have a panoramic view of Jinan City.
Shandong Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery is located on the east side of Qianfo Mountain with a history of more than eighty years.
The cemetery with three main tombs was built along the mountain and the layout of the three tombs is in the shape of a Chinese character-“品”. The revolutionary martyrs’s cemetery is not only a place that buries the martyrs, but also a famous scenic spot which attracts many tourists with its magnificent scenery and quiet environment.
Wanfo Cave, located on the north side of Thousand-Buddha Mountain, was constructed in 1992.
The cave is composed of four grottoes, namely Mogao Caves, the Longmen Grottoes, the Yungang Caves and the Maiji Caves. There are about 23,000 statues of Buddhas, including Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Disciples and Guardian Kings. It is about 500 meters (1,640 feet) long, recording the developments and changes of Chinese Buddhism. In addition, there are scattered Tang Huai Pavilion, "Qi Yan nine points", "cloud path of Zen pass" and other attractions. Wanfo Cave is a cave about 500 meters long, in which there are more than 23,000 statues of various kinds.
Located on the south side of Qianfo Mountain, the Qi Lu Inscriptions Cultural Garden shows the replicas of 132 sets of well-known stone tablets in the history of Shandong from the Qin Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. With beautiful environments and lush vegetations, it is a cultural garden scenic spot that combines local garden characteristics with the history and culture of Shandong.
