Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon, located at Qira County of Hotan City in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is in the south of the Kunlun Mountains that are known as the “ancestor of mountains” in China. With an altitude of more than 3,600 meters, the Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon connects the Tarim Basin and the Kunlun Mountains. It is almost 210 kilometres from Hotan City. Surrounded by the Kunlun Mountains, it has many rare natural wonders of the world with beautiful landscapes.
In Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon, the beauty of snow, grassland and rivers complement each other. People are amazed by the majestic beauty of the mountains, the desert, and the alpine meadow. It is such a beautiful and natural scene that attracts many domestic and foreign tourists.
Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon has abundant tourism activities. It offers sightseeing and leisure vacations as well as business exhibitions and other expansion projects. Activities include hiking, horse riding, camel riding, mountaineering etc. It is rated as one national 3A scenic spot. Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon has been brought to the forefront of the local government’s attention which promotes the development of local tourism.
The First Pasture is the closest to the Kunlun Mountains and located in Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon, 210 km away from Hotan City. With a grassland area of 0.2 billion square meters, it is the southernmost pasture of the 14th Division of Xinjiang Construction Corps. It goes deep into the hinterland of the Kunlun Mountains. All the plants and trees here are native species of the area.
First Pasture is the largest natural alpine pasture in Hotan City. The annual average temperature here is only 12.2 centigrade. Even in summer the temperature is cool and comfortable which makes it an attractive resort for tourists. The vast pasture is dotted with white yurts and grazing horses. The scenery is very charming and beautiful.
With the highest altitude reaching 3,700 metres, the Wooden Path Along Tag Mountain is about 2,300 metres long and is famous as the “Road to the Sky”, which is like a long dragon hovering on the mountain. The plank road is full of twists and turns and leads to a secluded quiet place which is the tourists’ favourite.
The Wooden Path Along Tag Mountain seems to connect the sky, high mountains, and grasslands. On a sunny day, the reflection of blue sky and white clouds covers the whole wooden plank road giving a feeling of walking on the clouds. In cloudy weather, the wooden plank road looms in the fog and clouds. If you are brave enough you should not miss the chance to challenge the “Road to the Sky” on the top of the Kunlun Mountains.
Going straight along the wooden path, you will come to the Tag Mountain Viewing Platform. From the viewing platform you have a panoramic view of the charming scenery. There is a lake not far away from here whose water comes from the high mountains. The lake and high mysterious Kunlun Mountains covered with snow offer an amazing and beautiful picture. A highway passes around the lake and there are herds of cattle and sheep wandering around the lake bank, which adds beauty to the area and brings visitors more pleasure.
The Viewing Platform is an excellent place to enjoy the vista of the Kunlun Mountains. Standing on the viewing platform, the mountains stand out in silhouette. The fresh air and the beautiful natural environment of Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon make it an excellent place to enjoy the sunshine during the day and observe the brilliant moon and stars at night.
The Ice waterfall is located in a valley at the base of Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon. There are natural glaciers, snow peaks and rare flowers which are used in Chinese herbal medicines. Looking from afar, the snow mountain of Kunlun, which seldom melts all year round, presents a magnificent sight. Against this background, the unparalleled ice waterfall is an unforgettable sight. The Ice Waterfall welcomes tourists from all over the world with its unique charm.
Five Colour Spring is a high mountain spring located in the branch line of the Kunlun Mountains, covering an area of 1,500 square meters. The spring is named after the phenomenon that it always appears in all the wonderful colours of the rainbow when the spring is illuminated by the sun. The clear spring water is sparkling under the sunlight, reflecting the colourful light, as if bringing visitors into another mysterious world.
The Log Cabins are located at the foot of Tag Mountain. The interior design mainly highlights the hegemony of the Kunlun Mountains and grassland culture. Tourists will enjoy strolling amongst them. The comfortable log cabins are also the best choice of accommodation besides yurts.
The Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon is worth visiting all year round. There are more people in summer and autumn, followed by spring, then winter. Summer (June to August) is the best time to travel to the Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon. At that time, although the temperature of Hotan City can reach over 33℃, the weather in the Grand Canyon is only around 20℃, which is more suitable and comfortable than other places. It is the best time to climb to the Tag Mountain Viewing Platform with the cool wind.
1. Please pay attention that the altitude of the mountains here is about 3,200 metres and there is a big temperature difference between morning and night. Whenever you have a visit to the Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon you should take warm clothing with you.

The traffic here is not well developed. Most tourists choose to drive by themselves or rent a car. It is about two hours’ drive from Hotan City to Qira County and takes about three hours to drive to the Kunlun Mountain Grand Canyon from the county.
