The bronze statue of Queen Victoria, the origin of the name of Victoria Park, stands at the entrance to the south of the Victoria Park. It was made to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne. On the other hand, this statue has gone through many ups and downs with the turbulence of history.
The bronze statue of Queen Victoria was originally located in Hong Kong’s Statue Square. During World War II, it was transported to Japan by Japanese soldiers to prepare for melting as military materials. Fortunately, before their action, Japan unconditionally surrendered and the bronze statue escaped the fate of being melted. However, the bronze statue was seriously destroyed but was repaired by experts. At the same time, after many years, the Queen’s throne on the original Statue Square was also damaged and could not be rebuilt. Therefore, the government had to find a new site to erect the bronze statue again so that the newly-built park is named “Victoria Park”.
