Victoria Harbour, one of the three natural harbors in the world, is a harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula in Hong Kong, China. 
 

Richly endowed by nature with broad estuary and deep water, Hong Kong is also known as the "Pearl of the East" and "one of the top three night scenes of the world". 
 

The name of Victoria Harbour comes from Queen Victoria of England. It's accessible all year round. In the early years, it was regarded by the British as an excellent port in East Asia. Later, the British seized Hong Kong from the hands of the Qing government and developed its maritime trade in the Far East. Victoria Harbour has been influencing Hong Kong's history and culture, leading the economic and tourism development of Hong Kong, China. Since 1906, Hong Kong has held the Victoria Harbour Swimming Competition, which was once an annual event. At that time, the swimming distance was 1600 meters from Tsim Sha Tsui Public Pier in Kowloon to Queen's Pier in Central. However, due to difficulties in harbour closure, deteriorated water quality, and closure of the Tsim Sha Tsui Public Pier caused by the construction of Hong Kong Cultural Centre, it was suspended in 1979. Since the implementation of the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme in 2001, the water quality has improved significantly. In 2011, the swimming race, which was suspended for 33 years, resumed on November 16th.

Harbour Fest

Held from October to November in 2003, Harbour Fest aimed to boost Hong Kong's economy after the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) at the beginning of the year, provide opportunities for cultural exchanges between international and Asian pop singers and fans, and attract more tourists to Hong Kong, enabling Hong Kong an international focus. The Hong Kong Tourism Association, the predecessor of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, held the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races in Victoria Harbour. Founded in 1976, the event was first held in Shau Kei Wan Typhoon Shelter. Since then, it has been held in the sea off Tsim Sha Tsui East and Wan Chai. Every year, teams from different countries of the world are invited to compete. It is a major event in Hong Kong's dragon boat industry, attracting many visitors on both sides of the harbour.

On New Year's Eve, hundreds of thousands of Hong Kong people gather on both sides of Victoria Harbour to celebrate the new year. On New Year's Eve on December 31, 2007, 400, 000 people gathered on the north and south sides of the port to celebrate the countdown of the new year. This was the first spectacular fireworks display on the roof of the second phase of the International Financial Center, the tallest building in Hong Kong.

To celebrate special festivals and attract tourists, several fireworks displays are held in Victoria Harbour every year. Since 2004, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has staged the laser spotlight and music performance, “A Symphony of Lights”, every night, with more than 40 buildings participating. 
 

On November 21, 2005, the show was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “world’s largest light and music show” .

Tsim Sha Tsui, the southernmost part of the Kowloon Peninsula, is located in the center of Victoria Harbour, surrounded by Victoria Harbour on three sides. Therefore, there is a waterfront promenade on the waterfront of Tsim Sha Tsui, which embraces the whole sea view of Victoria Harbour. 
 

From 2004 to 2005, the Hong Kong government spent HK $190 million to beautify the promenade, which now includes the Hong Kong Cultural Center, the Avenue of Stars, restaurants, transport terminals, and Urban Council Centenary Garden.
 

Avenue of stars, one of the attractions of Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, was opened on April 27, 2004. It was built to praise the outstanding people, both living and dead, who have contributed to the film industry in Hong Kong. With their palm prints on the avenue, it is one of the new tourist attractions in Hong Kong.
 

Among them is the bronze statue of Bruce Lee, an international martial arts superstar, which is 2 meters high and made according to the film "Dragon Tiger Gate".

Covering an area of 36,000 square meters, the West Kowloon Promenade is located at the southern end of West Kowloon. The corridor was optimized in 2006 and reopened on February 1, 2007. 
 

The West Kowloon Promenade has a 700m long wooden walking path, a 1.6km long cultural light corridor (composed of 123 4-meter-high triangular light boxes with wind chimes on the top), and a 1,500m long cycling track.

Golden Bauhinia Square was established to commemorate the restoration of Chinese sovereignty over Hong Kong. At that time, the Central People's Government presented a statue of Golden Bauhinia to Hong Kong and placed it in the new wing of the newly completed Convention and Exhibition Center. Facing the harbor, it has become one of the important tourist attractions in Hong Kong. 
 

The flag-raising ceremony is held in Golden Bauhinia Square every day at 8:00. On special days, such as the anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Chief Executive and other government officials attend the ceremony and the National Anthem is played by the police band.

 

Best Travel Time 

Autumn and winter are the best time to visit the harbour. The beautiful scenery of Victoria Harbour can be seen all year round, but it is cool in autumn and warm in winter, which is suitable for walking.
 

There may be a typhoon landing in Hong Kong from May to August. During this period, tourists should pay attention to the weather forecast in advance.

 

How to Get to the Victoria Harbour

 By Bus

Take bus 1, 1a, 8, 8a, 8p, 9 to Tsim Sha Tsui Pier.

Take MTR Tsuen Wan Line and get off at Tsim Sha Tsui Station, and take Exit E. Go towards the sea along Nathan Road for about 600 meters.
 

 By Taxi

If you go to the Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong International Airport, you can get off at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier and it takes about 40 minutes (300 HKD).

If you go to the Victoria Harbour from Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station, you can get off at Tsim Sha Tsui Pier and it takes about 10 minutes (30 HKD).
