History of the Harbour City

Harbour City was constructed on the site of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown, one of colonial Hong Kong’s original commercial wharf and dockside warehousing complexes. Harbour City is still owned by the Wharf (Holdings), a company originally known as The Hong Kong and Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company, which was established by Sir Paul Chater in Hong Kong in 1886. Just as its name suggests, the original business of the company was to operate wharves and dockside warehousing. The company was renamed in 1986. The current major holder of the company is Wheelock & Co., which was founded in 1886 to operate the Godown but has since gradually grown into a major commercial force in Hong Kong.

Features of the Harbour City

Harbour City has special venues for performances and small exhibitions. It hosts “Music in the City”, which is an activity that invites many bands to play in the mall on Saturdays and Sundays.

In front of the southern entrance of Harbour City stand five flagpoles. It is an important place for public gatherings and activities. In the past, the flags on the five flagpoles were the Union Jack, the Hong Kong Flag, Wharf, Harbour City, and the Star Ferry. After the return of Hong Kong in 1997, the flags hung on the five flagpoles have been replaced by Wharf, Harbour City, Wharf Telecom, Hong Kong Cable TV, and the Star Ferry. In recent years, the flags have been replaced by the national flag of the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR Flag, Wharf, Harbour City, and the Star Ferry.
