Yabuli is the snowy Mecca of China. In 1897, when the Middle East Railway was being built, a large area of apple trees was discovered, so the place was named “Yabloni” in Russian, which means apple orchard, and the Chinese transliteration “Yabuli” is still in use today. During the Anti-Japanese War, the Northeast Anti-Japanese Allied Forces and the later novel Lin Hai Xue yuan (Tracks in the Snowy Forest) left many stories and legends here.
On December 26, 2014, the Yabuli Ski Resort realized the “three mountain networking”, namely the ski trails of the three conterminous mountains connected, forming a brand-new Yabuli Ski Resort, with a total length of 71,875 meters, 46 ski trails among which a single ski trail can reach 5 kilometers long at most. Among them, the advanced ski trails account for 24%, intermediate ski trails account for 52%, and elementary ski trails account for 24%. In order to meet the needs of the majority of ski enthusiasts, various types of ski trails such as the international standard single and double-board track, Cat Jumping Track, Wave Track, Wild Snow Track, Chase Track, and Snowboard Park have been created.
The Yabuli Sun Ski Resort, formerly known as Windmill Mountain Villa founded in 1996, was the first ski resort in China. It is the birthplace of public skiing in China and the cradle of talent training in the skiing industry of China. Many early ski enthusiasts and ski resort operators in China were enlightened by the Yabuli Sun Ski Resort. The resort has superior alpine skiing conditions, high mountains and dense forests, magnificent and beautiful natural landscapes with an average annual temperature of 2-10 degrees Celsius and snow depth in winter of 1-2 meters, good snow quality and moderate hardness. The average temperature in winter is -10℃, the snow cover period is 170 days, and the skiing period is nearly 150 days. The best skiing period here is from mid-November to late March of the following year.
There are 17 ski trails in Yabuli Sun Ski Resort. The total length of the ski trails is 31,075 meters, and the maximum drop is 540 meters. The total area of the ski area reaches 520,000 square meters. Not only is there A1 Xingfu Avenue (the former Trail No. 6) that the majority of snow lovers are most familiar with and favor, there is also the A5 Brave Road (the former Trail No. 9) that the veterans of the Chinese skiing industry like to challenge.
Yabuli, a beautiful and lovely mountain city, was a place where imperial family and nobles cultivated Chinese herbal medicine during the Jin Dynasty. During the Qing Dynasty, it was always used as a hunting enclosure for the royal family, and the public were prohibited from entering the forest to plant and hunt. In 1861, the ban was put to an end. At that time, there were pine trees all over the mountains.
In 1980, in order to develop skiing sports, Heilongjiang Provincial Government established a ski training base in Yabuli, and successively hosted the 5th, the 7th, and the 10th National Winter Games and the 3rd Asian Winter Games, and successfully held the 24th World University Winter Games in 2009. In 1994, the National Polar Scientific Expedition Training Base was completed in Yabuli. So far, it has received 21 batches of scientific expeditions who went to Antarctica for winter training.
In the same year, China won the right to host the third Asian Winter Games in February 1996. With the good chances brought by the third Asian Winter Games held in Yabuli, Yabuli Ski Resor carried out large-scale constructions and transformations, and various infrastructures were significantly improved. Since then, Yabuli has been well-known as a famous ski town across the whole country.
In order to do a good job in the reception of the 3rd Asian Winter Games, China International Futures Brokerage Co., Ltd., in response to the earnest request of the Heilongjiang Provincial Government, invested more than 300 million yuan in Yabuli on August 20, 1994 to build China’s first ski resort mainly for tourism. In January 1996, a modern ski resort with a European style, Windmill Mountain Villa, was completed. The completion of Windmill Mountain Villa marked the birth of China’s commercial skiing industry.
Since its establishment, Yabuli Windmill Mountain Villa has gained a high reputation in Asia and even the world. It is known as the flagship of the domestic ski tourism industry. Many political and business dignitaries and celebrities have visited Windmill Mountain Villa and spoke highly of it. During the Asian Winter Games in 1996, President Jiang Zemin at that time visited Yabuli and watched the freestyle skiing and ski jumping competitions.
In 1999, the first China Heilongjiang International Ski Festival was held in Windmill Mountain Villa.
