Located on the Wuyang River and surrounded by mountains, Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a famous town in Zhenyuan County, Qiandongnan Miao, and Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Guizhou Province. The river winds through the city in the shape of an "S". The old prefectural city is on the north bank and the old acropolis on the south, so the view from a distance is quite similar to a Tai Chi diagram. The two cities were both built in the Ming Dynasty, and some of the city walls and gates still exist. There are a lot of ancient buildings, traditional residences, and historical docks both inside and outside the city.
The ancient town of Zhenyuan enjoys a convenient location, with the Xiangqian Railway, Zhuzhou-Liuzhou Railway, National Highway 320, and Shanghai-Kunming Expressway passing through it. It is 90 kilometers, 170 kilometers, and 270 kilometers away from Tongren Airport, Hunan Zhijiang Airport, and Guiyang Airport, respectively. The county borders Xinhuang in Hunan in the east, Sansui and Jianhe in the south, Shibing in the west, and Cengong and Shiqian in the north, which is known as "the key of Yunnan, Hubei, and Hunan, the gate of eastern Guizhou".
Zhenyuan has a long history. It has about 2,300 years’ history since the establishment of the county in the 30th year of King Qin Zhao (277 BC). And It is 700 years when it was used as the political center of Fu (House) and Dao (Road) in the Yuan and Qing Dynasty.
In the 6th year of Song Baoyou (1258), Huangping City was built in November and named Zhenyuan Zhou(County), which was the beginning of the name Zhenyuan. Zhenyuan Zhou was established in the 4th year of Ming Hongwu (1371).
In the 11th year of Yongle (1412), Zhenyuan became “Fu”(Prefecture-level city in ancient China).
In the 3rd year of Zhengtong (1438), Zhenyuan Zhou was reformed.
In the 11th year of Hongzhi (1446), Zhenyuan County was established and was subordinated to Zhenyuan Fu.
In the 29th year of Wanli (1601), it is changed into “Wei”(guarding city).
In the 22nd year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1683), “Wei” was incorporated into the county.
On November 8, 1949, Zhenyuan was liberated and became the resident of Zhenyuan Commissioner’s Office.
In 1956, the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture were established, and Zhenyuan was the capital of the autonomous prefecture.
In 1958, the capital was moved to Kaili, and Zhenyuan was changed to a county.
In 1986, it was listed as a national historical and cultural city by the State Council.
On January 7, 2020, it was designated as a national 5A tourist attraction by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Located in Yangchang Town, 34 kilometers northwest of Zhenyuan County, High River is composed of virgin forests, canyons, rapids, and waterfalls. Within the 34-square-kilometer scenic spot, there is abundant vegetation, towering ancient trees, exotic flowers and plants, and a wide variety of species. It is 900 meters above sea level and the annual average temperature is 14.5℃. It is known as a "recreational summer resort, holiday rafting paradise". Every summer, people come to the High River for rafting in an endless stream.|
Wuyang River is dominated by high gorges, flat lakes, waterfall springs, and karsts. The scenery of mountains and rivers is charming.
Black Dragon Cave is located on the Zhonghe Mountain in the east of Zhenyuan, a famous historical and cultural city in China. The mountains here are tall and straight, with sheer cliffs, giant rocks, and caves.
Shiping Mountain, located on the east side of Wuyang River, Wuyang Town, Zhenyuan County, Guizhou Province, belongs to the Qilian Mountains. The North mountain on the other side of the city is like a large screen erected in the mountain.
Zhenyuan Ancient City is a "traditional cultural labyrinth" completely integrated with nearly 200 historical sites, covering an area of 3.1 square kilometers. It is also an ancient city of diversification and integration, with more than 20 ethnic minorities. The fusion of various cultures makes Zhenyuan a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-society museum, which is called the "world cultural protection circle" by experts.
