Canton Tower, also known as Guangzhou New TV Tower, is nicknamed Xiaomanyao(Slim Waist). It is located near the Chigang Tower, Haizhu District in Guangzhou, 125 meters away from the south bank of the Pearl River, and faces Zhujiang New Town, Huacheng Square and Haixinsha Island across the river.
The main body of the Canton Tower is 454-meter high, whose antenna mast is 146-meter high. As a national AAAA tourist attraction, it is the highest tower in China and the fourth highest tower in the world, second only to Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai (828m), Sky Tree TV Tower in Tokyo (634m) and KVLY TV Tower in North Dakota.
The Canton Tower is a landmark in Guangzhou, which can withstand M8 earthquake and M12 typhoon, with a designed service life of more than 100 years. There is a “Spiderman Walk” at 168~334.4m of the body of Canton Tower, which is the highest and longest aerial walking ladder in the world. At 422.8 meters of the tower, there is the highest revolving restaurant in the world. At the top of the tower of 450~454m, there is a Ferris wheel, which is the world’s highest Ferris wheel. Sky Drop is located at 455~485m of the antenna mast, which is the highest vertical prompt drop amusement facility in the world.
Constructed by Guangzhou Construction Group Co. LTD and Shanghai Construction Engineering Group, Canton Tower covers a total area of 114,054 square meters. It was completed in September 2009 and was officially opened to the public on September 30th, 2010.
The Canton Tower is called “guǎng zhōu tǎ” in Chinese. Most of the TV towers in the world are named after place names, so it is with Canton Tower. Because overseas survey data shows that the foreigners mainly know about Beijing and Shanghai among various Chinese cities, while they are unfamiliar with Guangzhou and even have no idea about where it is in China. Therefore, the denomination of the TV tower of Guangzhou is beyond a matter of naming, it undertakes the responsibility of spreading the concept of “Guangzhou” to the whole world.
“Guangzhou Tower” is not adopted as the English name of the tower, and the reason is that “Guangzhou” is an unfamiliar concept to western countries and the pronunciation is also troublesome for foreigners. More importantly, as the origin and starting point of the Maritime Silk Road, Canton has been known as the English name of Guangzhou in the history of opening-up and trade with the outside world. “Canton” not only refers to Guangzhou, but also refers to Guangdong. In a similar way, citizens of Guangzhou and Guangdong are called “Cantonese”.
On December 15th, 2003, the Opinions on Accelerating the Construction of Cultural Infrastructure in Guangzhou was passed by Guangzhou Municipal Government, proposing that the project should be led by the Municipal Construction Committee and coordinated by Guangzhou TV Station. Then the construction of Guangzhou New TV Tower was officially started.
In 2004, Canton Tower conducted a global design competitive tender, and the winning-bid was to build a 450-high architecture. The middle part of the tower was twisted to form an oval shape of “slim waist”. As the height spirals up, its diameter gradually decreases. The function of different floors is based on the climatic region where they are located.
On November 25th, 2005, the construction of the Canton Tower officially started.
On April 6th, 2006, the acceptance of the Canton Tower foundation trench project was completed, and the general contracting for construction began.
On April 25th, 2006, the main pile foundation engineering construction of the Canton Tower was started.
On August 27th, 2008, the top of 454-meter high main body of the Canton Tower was completed.
On September 16th, 2009, a campaign of the naming of Guangzhou New TV Tower was launched around the world. Then, it was named Canton Tower officially on September 28th, 2010.
Having been completed the construction on September 28th, 2009, the Canton Tower has opened to public since September 30th, 2010. From October 1st, tickets were officially sold to visitors. The rebroadcast of Guangzhou Asian Games was assigned to the Canton Tower as well.
Located at the height of 488m of the antenna mast of Canton Tower, this outdoor viewing platform is the highest place that visitors can reach. It has been awarded the title of “The Highest Observation Deck” by Guinness World Record from 2012 to 2014. Standing on the top of the Canton Tower, the panorama of Guangzhou can be viewed in 360 degrees without obstacles.
This 450m extreme speed vertical descending project is set between 455m and 485m of the antenna mast of Canton Tower. It is the Guinness World Record holder of the highest adventurous journey. There is not only the traditional “sitting jump”, but also the “standing jump” simulating free falling, which is the optimal choice for the super brave to challenge upper limit.
Bubble Tram is the most popular amusement item in Canton Tower. There are 16 cabins made of fully transparent materials, and one cabin can accommodate about 6 visitors. It takes about 20 minutes for the cabins to turn a circle.
At the height of 428m and 433m, there are two theme sightseeing halls, named white cloud and starry night observation decks respectively. Here, visitors can appreciate the blue sky, white clouds, bright stars and the beautiful scenery of the new central axis of Guangzhou and the Pearl River.
The two floors of the observation deck are equipped with fully transparent glass corridors, which offers tourists an exciting viewing experience as the world is beneath their feet. It is the optimal place for taking photos, and a must visit site when coming to the Canton Tower.
Located at the Functional Zone B of the tower, the Jinyi cinema is the highest top-level luxurious cinema in Guangzhou, with the most advanced audiovisual equipment in the world. It can provide you with the first-class audiovisual effect and the life-like experience.
The Mediterranean Buffet Revolving Restaurant on the 106th floor of Canton Tower has won the Guinness Book of Records for the title of “The Highest Revolving Restaurant in a Building”.
