Qinghui Garden Museum (Qinghui Garden) is located in Qinghui Road, Daliang Town, Shunde District of Foshan City. Situated in the center of the city, this garden enjoys convenient transportation and is one of the Four Great Gardens of Guangdong Province. The phrase “Qinghui” means warm sunshine representing the love and kindness of one’s parents.
The garden shows the culture of the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1636-1912) Dynasties, the style of ancient gardens in Lingnan (refers to Chinese provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan), and the garden art in the south regions of the Yangtze River and Pearl River delta water town scenery.
The Garden is mainly composed of three parts, the south part, the central part, and the north part. The south part is famous for its waterscape and pavilions by the water. The central part possesses major buildings in the garden, and the north part was the residence of the garden owner. All these make Qinghui Garden a picturesque fairyland for tourists.
The garden was originally built in the Ming Dynasty by Huang Shijun, the very best scholar at that time. He constructed two buildings which later became a part of the garden to show the great honor of becoming an excellent scholar as well as a high-ranking official.
With the decline of the Huang family, the garden was deserted, and no one lived there. Later, it was purchased by another scholar, Long Yingshi in the Qing Dynasty. His eldest son Long Tinghuai, built the garden for his mother to enjoy her later life.
In 1806 Long Yuanren, Long Tinghuai’s son, invited a famous calligrapher to write down the name “Qinghui Garden” above the gate.
In 2011, the decedents of the Long family donate the garden to the government.
Near the gate of the garden, the Chengyi Pavilion stands by and extends to a pond. It is also the best place to enjoy the panoramic view of the scenery in the garden such as the rippled water surface, the crimson lotus, and other major spots.
These two are connected, which once were the places for children in the family to study and scholars in the family to engage in scholarship. “Xiyin” means to cherish your time and study hard and “Zhen” means real and “Yan” means inkstones which have been considered as the land for Chinese scholars where they grow the seedlings of learning.
It is said that Bixi Thatched Cottage is the earliest building in Qinghui Garden and Long Tinghuai built it for his mother to live in. There is an exquisite and vivid bamboo woodcarving in the outer room. On the apron board of the glass screen door, nearly one hundred Chinese characters “shòu” (longevity) were engraved.
The Boat Hall, also known as land boat, boathouse, or anchorless boat, is in the shape of a big boat and is a unique two-story building. It is often the case that the first half of a boat hall faces water on three sides and a flat bridge located at the head part of a boat hall serves as a connection between the Boat Hall and the bank. The Boat Hall in Qinghui Garden is a typical example of this type of buildings in China.
It is said that the hall was built in the shape of a boatel on the Pearl River in the Qing Dynasty. The hall once serves as a boudoir for unmarried young ladies in the family.
