Datong Nine-Dragon Wall is located on Heyang Street, Pingcheng District, Datong city. It was built for Zhu Gui, the 13th son of the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, in 1392. Actually, Nine-Dragon Wall is the screen before the residence of Zhu Gui. It has a history of more than 600 years.

The nine-dragon wall of Datong is made of 426 pieces of specially-made colored glass, with a height of 8 meters, a thickness of 2.02 and a length of 45.5 meters. Nine carved flying dragons are evenly distributed on the wall.

The gaps among the nine dragons are filled with patterns of rocks and grasses, which are well combined with each other. The top of the wall is covered with glazed tiles, and the following part is supported by glazed brackets. The bottom of the wall is supported by a 2.09 meters high base, with 41 groups of patterns of “two dragons playing with beads” carved on it. The middle of the wall is made up of 75 glass brick reliefs, with different patterns carved on it, such as cattle, horse, sheep, dog, deer, rabbit and other animal images. They are lively and colorful.

The east and west ends of the wall are respectively the pattern of the rising sun and the bright moon in the sky, decorated with flowing clouds. There is a rectangular reflecting pool in front of the Dragon Wall. Nine carved flying dragons are reflected in the water.

Development of Nine-Dragon Wall

The Nine-Dragon Wall of Datong was built in 1392 when Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, established his capital at Yingtianfu( acient Nanjing city). In order to consolidate central rule, he successively granted 25 of his sons the title of king in important places in the country.

Zhu Gui, the thirteenth son of Zhu Yuanzhang, had never read books since he was a child. He was stubborn and had a very strange temper. Zhu Yuanzhang thought that he had neither talent nor virtue, so let him take charge of the task of guarding Datong city. In the late Hongwu Period of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1398), Zhu Gui built a palace as his residence in Datong city under the emperor's spoiling. The Nine-dragon wall was built at that time in front of the imperial palace.

In 1954, it moved 28 meters southward according to the original condition of Nine-Dragon Wall to the present position due to urban construction.
