Situated in Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area on the south coast of Dalian city, a national landscape area with hills at the back and the sea in the front, Dalian Forest Zoo covers an area of 7.2 square kilometers. It officially opened to the visitors in 1997.
The zoo consists of two parts connected by an escalator. The Captive Breeding Zone built in 1997 and the Free-ranging Zone built in 2000, boasting over 3000 animals of more than 200 species which include birds, reptiles, and exotic animals from all over the world, such as giant pandas, Siberian tigers, golden monkeys, and flamingos.
Accumulator cars are available in the zoo for visitors to get a great view of the zoo. Services such as special facilities for babies and the disabled as well as fast-food restaurants are also available in the zoo, all of which provide much convenience for visitors.
One expert of environmental conservation from the UN once put it “It (Dalian Forest Zoo) is a high-grade zoo that allows humans to live in a pollution-free urban environment and animals to live in a natural environment without human interference”.
Dalian Forest Zoo was built on the basis of the former “Luxun Park” constructed in 1947 and was relocated from the downtown of Dalian to the Baiyuan Mountain Scenic Area in 1995.
In 1997, Dalian Forest Zoo (the Captive Breeding Zone) opened to the public after two years’ reconstruction.
In 1998, it was listed in the “TOP 50 Scenic Spots” in Liaoning Province and the “TOP 10 Scenic Spots” in Dalian.
The construction of the Free-ranging Zone started at the end of 1999 and was completed in 2000.
In 2000, Dalian Forest Zoo was officially approved as the first batch of National 4A Tourist Attractions by the National Tourism Administration.
In recent years, the zoo has been upgrading its facilities and expanding its scale of operations to provide a high-quality sightseeing experience for visitors.
Located on the east side of the Tropical Forest Reptile Pavilion in the Free-ranging Zone, the Panda Pavilion adjoins the Small Animals Village and the Visitor Center, covering an area of 10,000 square meters. Now three giant pandas and more than 20 lesser pandas are living in the pavilion.
The pavilion is divided into four parts according to different functions: the outdoor exhibition area, the indoor exhibition area, the indoor cage, and the logistics area. With an area of about 1200 square meters, the outdoor exhibition area provides enough space for giant pandas and lesser pandas to move around, while the indoor exhibition area covers an area of 500 square meters, which not only provides a shelter for pandas in bad weather but also makes it convenient for sightseeing.
The pavilion is the first and the only permanent exhibition hall for giant pandas in Northeastern China.
The Golden Monkey Pavilion is situated in the southern part of the Captive Breeding Zone and was opened to the public in 2016, which is the first one in China that integrates the functions of breeding, exhibition, protection, and education. Now more than 40 golden monkeys are living in the pavilion.
The Small Animals Village is a great place for people especially kids to enjoy small-sized and baby animals. Visitors will have the chance to get close to and interact with animals and can even watch the process of hatching and rearing baby animals. Now it has become one of the most popular scenic spots in the zoo.
Built in 2000, the Tropical Rainforest Reptile Pavilion covers an area of 10,000 square meters and is divided into five zones: the service area at the entrance, the human and nature zone, the desert landscape area, the tropical fruits park, and the tropical plants area. More than 15,000 plants of over 400 species are grown inside, creating beautiful tropical landscapes for visitors. What’s more, more than 30 species of reptiles including blue-tongued lizards, reticulated pythons, and Siamese crocodiles are living in the pavilion.
In Dalian Forest Zoo, funny and touching stories happen every day.
The three giant pandas named Jinhu (golden tiger), Miaoyin (beautiful voice), and Feiyun (flying cloud) have become superstars and even celebrities on social media now. Thousands of people can watch their pictures and short videos posted on the official blog of the zoo. Every year the staff in the zoo hold birthday parties for them. In 2020, Jinhu even celebrated its 10th birthday with more than 20 ten-year-old children invited by the zoo.
A mother giraffe once had some difficulties in giving birth to her baby. Fortunately, with the help of the staff who has taken care of her for 12 years, the baby giraffe was born successfully.
In hot summers, staff often provide cool fresh fruits, and even air conditioners for animals to help them to cool down.
The harmonious relationship between animals and human beings is of great importance. When animals in the zoo provide joy and happiness for us, we should take good care of and love them.
