Approved by the State Council, citizens with passports from 53 countries are allowed to stay in certain cities for up to 144 hours (6 days) without applying for a Chinese travel visa to experience local culture and life. You can enjoy a journey in China easier. We have listed here the most important information you may need for planning a visa-free journey to China.
1. Shanghai Municipality, Jangsu Province and Zhejiang Province
Shanghai Municipality, Jangsu Province and Zhejiang Province have adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 30, 2016.
An eligible passenger can transfer via any of the following ports of entry including Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal, Shanghai Railway Station, Nanjing Lukou International Airport, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, and Ningbo Lishe Airport and stay within the administrative precincts of Shanghai Municipality, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province for 144 hours.
2. Beijing Municipality, Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province
Beijing Municipality, Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province have adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since December 28, 2017.
An eligible passenger can transfer via any of the following ports of entry including Beijing Capital International Airport, Beijing West Railway Station, Tianjin Binhai International Airport, Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport, Qinhuangdao Sea Port, and Qinhuangdao Beidaihe International Airport and stay within the administrative precincts of Beijing Municipality, Tianjin Municipality and Hebei Province for 144 hours.
3. Liaoning Province
Liaoning Province has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 1, 2018.
An eligible passenger can transfer via any of the following ports of entry including Shenyang Taoxian International Airport and Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport, and stay within the administrative precincts of Liaoning Province for 144 hours.
4. Chengdu City
Chengdu City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Shuangliu International Airport.
Passengers qualifying under the 144-hour visa-free transit are allowed to travel within Chengdu and other 10 cities in Sichuan, including Zigong, Luzhou, Deyang, Suining, Neijiang, Leshan, Ziyang, Yibin, Ya'an, and Meishan. Unfortunately, the famous Jiuzhai Valley is not within this region.
5. Xiamen City
Xiamen City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Gaoqi International Airport and sea ports.
When using the 144-hour visa-free transit facility in Xiamen, the allowed areas to stay is limited to Xiamen City only, including the outskirts. Passengers are not permitted to visit any other cities in mainland China.
6. Wuhan City
Wuhan City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Tianhe International Airport.
The whole city of Wuhan is the allowable area to stay for foreign tourists entitled for this 144-hour visa-free transit policy. That is to say, the flight passengers who intend to transit in Wuhan for 6 days without visa are only able to sight-see Wuhan after leaving the airport.
7. Kunming City
Kunming City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Changshui International Airport.
Currently, passengers transiting in Kunming are only allowed to move around in this city if they wish to enjoy the 144-hour visa-free transit. It means those who want to take a tour to Lijiang, Dali, Xishuangbanna, or other cities need to get a normal visa.
8. Qingdao City
Qingdao City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since January 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Liuting International Airport and sea ports.
For those people who are eligible for the Qingdao 144 hours TWOV, not only the city of Qingdao, but also all other places of Shandong are areas included for visits during the 6 days transit time. For instance, if you are interested in the Confucius Temple in Qufu or want to explore the Baotu Spring Park in Jinan, it will be fine for you to leave Qingdao for the two cities of Shandong after obtaining the 144-hour free transit.
9. Guangdong City
Guangdong City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since May 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Guangzhou Airport, Shenzhen Airport, or Jieyang Airport, and travel within Guangdong Province.
Passengers are allowed to travel or conduct business in the whole Guangdong Province if using the 144-hour visa-free transit, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Dongguan. It's not allowed to get out of the province.
10. Xi'an City
Xi'an City has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since December 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Xianyang International Airport.
Passengers can travel around Xi'an city and Xianyang, where there are abundant tourist attractions and alluring foods.
11. Chongqing Municipality
Chongqing Municipality has adopted the 144-hour visa-free transit policy available to nationals from 53 countries since December 1, 2019.
An eligible passenger can transfer via Jiangbei Airport, and Wanzhou Wuqiao Airport.
Passengers are allowed to stay in downtown and suburban Chongqing. It’s worth to mention that the counties in the charge of Chongqing Municipality are also allowed to travel.
For instance, you have a group traveling like: Milan-Beijing (less than six days)-Hong Kong-Milan, or Milan-Beijing-Tokyo-Milan, you don't need a Chinese visa. The most important, the transit visa is free of charge, so you maybe save EUR100 per person. But before you come to China, you need to double check it with Chinese embassy in your country.

4. Claim the luggage and go through the custom
5. Leave airport
Upon arrival, find the 144-hour visa-free counter at the immigration inspection to apply for the stay permit, which will be stamped in your passport indicating the maximum length of stay. Remember to tell the officer if you have a visa for China but don't want to use it this time.
Foreign nationals, during their visa-free transit, must abide by Chinese laws and regulations.
They must not leave the specified area of stay or overstay the visa-free period. In the first 24 hours of entry, foreign nationals themselves should register their residence addresses with the local public security bureaus or foreigner service stations, or those who provide the foreign nationals with residence can complete the registration on their behalf. For foreign nationals who dwell at a hotel, the hotel has the obligation to register residence for them. In case of force majeure which necessitates a longer period of stay than 144 hours within the visa-free area, they need to lodge an application to the exit and entry administration department of a public security bureau for corresponding stay or residence documents.
