Welcome to Beijing! Our guide will wait for you at the airport with your name tag in hand. Then we will drive you to the hotel so that you will have a good rest. This will be the first day of your tour in China!
Before our trip, let's have a brief introduction to Beijing. Beijing, as the capital of China, is located in the northeast of China. China's territory is shaped like a rooster in the east of the world, and Beijing is at its heart. This ancient city has a history of more than three thousand years and was the capital of five dynasties in history. Thus, you can enjoy many world-class historical sites, such as the Forbidden City, the largest imperial palace in the world, and the Great Wall, the most magnificent defense project in the world. As the capital of China, Beijing still has great international influence.
Beijing connects the past and the present, and is full of cultural inheritance and innovation. With hutongs, teahouses, bar streets, and business districts, Beijing is full of traditional and modern elements that make the city vibrant. In 2008, the 29th Olympic Games were held in Beijing, which added vitality to the city. We hope you will like this famous historical and cultural city.
After enjoying breakfast, you will visit Tian’anmen Square which is in the center of Beijing. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1912), Tian’anmen Square was an important place for holding important ceremonies and issuing political decrees to the whole country, and also represented the majesty of feudal imperial power. On October 1, 1949, the People's Republic of China was founded and the founding ceremony was held in the square. Later, the construction of the Monument to the People's Heroes and the Chairman Mao Zedong Memorial Hall deepened the political significance of the square. It not only witnessed the occurrence of many important political and historical events but also witnessed how the Chinese nation grew from weak to strong step by step. You can learn about the history and changes of Modern China here.
After lunch, the next spot you will visit is the Temple of Heaven. The emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties offered sacrifices to heaven and begged for a good harvest here. Therefore, the Temple of Heaven used to be a place where only emperors could come. The Temple of Heaven, with an area of about 2.7 million square meters, is far larger than the Forbidden City which is about 0.72 million square meters. This is because the emperor of China called himself “the son of heaven,” and they did not dare to make their dwelling larger than the dwelling of heaven. And the funniest building in the Temple of Heaven is Echo Wall, which is 193 meters long. If you whisper at the east of the wall, your friend will hear clearly at the west of the wall. That is because it utilized the theory of sound waves.
The next place we will visit is the Summer Palace which is about 20 kilometers away. It will take us about one hour to drive there. It used to be an imperial garden of the Qing Dynasty and offered the royal families rest and entertainment. Three quarters of the Summer Palace is covered by Kunming Lake. Perfectly combined traditional Chinese architecture and surrounding natural landscapes, it is honored as “a museum of royal gardens”. You can go boating here and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and classical Chinese architecture along the banks.
Today after you finish breakfast, our tour guide will lead you to a new attraction - Hutongs, which has a long history and can derive from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). Hutongs in Beijing are the context of the city and the thoroughfare of traffic. Besides, they provide places for people to live. Nowadays, there are mainly ten famous Hutongs: South Luogu Lane, Smoking Pipe Byway, Mao'er Hutong, Guozijian Street, Liulichang, Goldfish Hutong, Dongjiaominxiang, Xijiaominxiang, Ju’er Hutong, and Bada Hutong. The longest street there is Dongjiaominxiang, whose original name is Dongjiangmixiang because it played a role in transportation in the Yuan Dynasty. You can visit those Hutongs by rickshaws. I promise it will be a great experience. You can also have family visits and feel local people’s enthusiasm, learning the changes of time and the history of Beijing.
After lunch, you will visit the Juyongguan Great Wall, estimated 51 KM away to the northwest of Hutongs and 60 KM away from the center of Beijing. Starting from Hutongs, it will take you 45 minutes or so to arrive there by driving. The Juyongguan Great Wall is a part of the Great Wall and was built in the Ming Dynasty to improve the capability of military defense. The center of it is the Cloud Platform, with 9.5 meters high and 12.9 meters long. There is a doorway in the center of the platform, where travelers and horses can pass. On its wall, there are also many animal reliefs so the Cloud Platform can be called a great stone carving art. Therefore, it is a good place for you to take photos and learn the stone carving culture.
