Named after the Stone Elephant Temple here, Stone Elephant Lake is endowed with natural resources and is known for its picturesque landscape. The pleasant ecological environment creates such enabling living conditions for a multitude of animals and plants. Furthermore, it serves as an ideal place for people to relax and enjoy themselves.
The lake, situated in the old-growth forests, embraces fresh air and delightful scenery. Featured by its natural advantages, it enjoys a sense of water fairyland, and people call it the “water maze.”
Walking into the scenic spot, you will immediately be attracted by the four hundred acres of grassland. Beautiful flowers, for example, lily, tulip, rose, and so on, are planted here, forming such a wonderful view.
The largest Tulip Show Festival in Asia is held every spring, and it seems to walk into a Dutch town. In autumn, the scenic spot will hold the Lily Tourist Festival, with the fragrance of lily spreading all over the scenic area.
In 2014, Stone Elephant Lake was designated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction, as well as the first batch of “Sichuan Environment Education Base.”
The origin of the lake’s name had something to do with the Stone Elephant Temple. With a history of more than 1,700 years, the temple can date back to the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280). It is said that Yanyan, a great general at that time, flew to heaven on an elephant. The temple consists of the Jade Buddha Hall, the Hermit Forest, the Heavenly King Hall, the Hall of the Goddess of Mercy, and the Stone Lion of the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220).
The lake lies in the virgin forest, boasting an area of about 373,333 square meters. A lot of water channels form a maze shape, being much more attractive to tourists. It is interesting that if you row on the lake, you might get lost. When visiting the lake, visitors may have the chance to enjoy the chirps of birds. Also, the thin mist at the top of the green hills at dawn will show a visual feast.
The enchanting ecological environment here, dotted with kinds of flowers, draws people’s attention every year all over the nation. The eye-catching flower beauty in Stone Elephant Lake adds much charm. The flowers here are not planted in greenhouses or flowerpots, and they bring visitors an experience to appreciate the unique beauty of flowers in nature.
In March each year, the Asian largest Tulip Festival is organized. When wandering the tulip flowers sea, tourists seem to be in a town in the Netherlands. More than that, the whole lake is welcomed with the lily’s fragrance in September when the Lily Tourist Festival comes.
The tower occupies an area of about 650 square meters, surrounded by clear water and mountains. It was established in memory of Wei Liaoweng, a minister and Neo-Confucianist of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). To advance and enrich Neo-Confucianism, Wei Liaoweng made lots of copies of the Confucian classics and devoted himself to the education work in Pujiang County. As a result, plenty of scholars came here to explore more about what he had done, thus raising the attention of the emperor.
So, after his death, the emperor awarded him the posthumous title of “Wenjing”. That is the origin of the tower’s name. As for the tower, it was built by the later generations to popularize and appreciate the contributions Wei Liaoweng had made. Later on, his disciples and many other scholars and men of letters always paid a visit to this tower and wrote many poems.
Wei Liaoweng was a minister and Neo-Confucianist of the Southern Song Dynasty. The establishment of the Wenjing Tower aimed to commemorate him, who made much more contributions to the development and prosperity of the education activity at that time. As a matter of fact, during his official life, he went through a difficult time. He had put forward many ideas, which were beneficial to the country and its people, but all of his helpful ideas got no adoption because those traitor ministers held the power.
Afterward, he chose to give full play to the key role of education in Pujiang County. Doing much work at first, he achieved success and received a good reputation for his teaching methods locally, and even in the whole nation. Not only did he obtain much admiration and respect from students, but also what he did caught the attention of the emperor. Furthermore, during a civil service examination held in Chengdu which only admitted ten candidates, his students did a great job: one won the first place and eight of his students were selected.
You can pay a visit to Stone Elephant Lake all year round, and you will always see different kinds of flowers blooming here and there. Apart from that, it is located in the subtropical humid region, warm in winter, and cool in summer. The whole year will provide people with an enabling mild climate, suitable temperature, as well as fresh air.
