Located in Gubeikou Town of Miyun District in Beijing, Gubei Water Town is at the foot of Simatai Great Wall. Gubeikou town is famous as a superior military geographical position because of its majestic and odd risk since ancient times. With its unique military culture, Gubeikou attracted numerous Chinese ancient literati and refined scholars, such as Su Zhe and Nalan Xingde. Even Emperor Kangxi and Qianlong praised the precipitousness and importance of its terrain time and again.
Gubei Water Town shares a picturesque landscape, which embraces the beautiful Mandarin Duck Lake Reservoir and rests against the Simatai Great Wall, the most magnificent and dangerous section of the Great Wall. The town is honored as “Wuzhen in Beijing” and is featured by a unique and typical northern architectural style with traditional courtyards.

In 1568, the 2nd year of the reign of Emperor Longqing of the Ming Dynasty, in order to strengthen the northern military defense, the Simatai Great Wall was reconstructed on its original basis.
In 1987, the Simatai Great Wall was recognized as “World Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO.
In 2012, the Simatai Great Wall was rated as “the head of the top 25 scenic spots in the world that can not be missed” by The Times.
In 2015, Gubei Water Town was rated as the "Best Ecological Civilization Award" and "the most promotional scenic spot of the year" in the Beijing list of China Tourism general rating list of 2014 by the Beijing News.

Simatai Great Wall starts from Wangjing Tower in the East and ends at Houchuankou in the west, with a total length of 5.7 kilometers. The Great Wall is like a giant dragon lying on the cliff, stretching across the east and the west, which is very spectacular when seeing from afar. The mountain here is like a person's fingers close together, showing a two-way ladder shape. The Simatai Great Wall is ingenious in conception, peculiar in design, and various in forms. It integrates many features of other sections of the Great Wall in one place, leading to its great reputation as “the Best Great Wall in China”.
Simatai Great Wall is divided into two sections by the Mandarin Duck Lake. What the Mandarin Duck Lake wins people’s great admiration is that the lake is mixed with the flowing hot spring at 37℃ all year round and icy and chilly cold spring. Even though it comes to the severe winter, the surface of the lake ripples blue waves and rises hot air.
The highest part of the Simatai Great Wall is Fairy Tower. It was said that the tower was changed from an antelope, named after the lotus fairy who lived there. It always looms in the white clouds, just like a girl who doesn't want to go out.
On the marvelous Fairy Tower, there are white marble arches carved with lotuses. Another famous place of Simatai Great Wall is Wangjing Tower, with an altitude of 986 meters, which is the highest point of cultural relics in Beijing. Standing on the tower, one can have a panoramic view of the faraway mountains and nearby waters.
Simatai Great Wall is the only ancient architectural site that retains the original appearance of the Ming Dynasty in China. It was admitted on the World Heritage List in 1987 and was recognized as the “Original Great Wall” by UNESCO. In the background of boundless and vast mountains, Simatai Great Wall, with its wounded body, seems to be coming from the storm of history, which gives us a very strong visual shock.
If you are interested in Chinese wine, Sima Liquor Distillery is a place that you cannot miss. Sima Liquor Distillery is not far from the entrance of Gubei Water Town, and you can smell the fragrance of wine from the distance before you reach there. In the distillery, it shows visitors some special and unique Chinese-style liquor-making raw materials, production equipment, and liquor storage containers. Moreover, visitors can have an in-depth feeling and knowledge of Chinese wine culture by witnessing the process of winemaking.
The liquor in the Sima Liquor Distillery is out of the ordinary. It is the most famous wine in Miyun District with a typical northern style. The liquor is made of sorghum and millet, which is so haunting and lingering aftertaste. It is a great choice for many visitors to buy some typical Chinese north-style wine as souvenirs or gifts to their families and friends.
If you go to Gubei Water Town with your little children, Kid Nation Hall is a good choice for a visit. Covering an area of 3,700 square meters, the Kid Nation Hall is the largest entertainment center for children with the most advanced equipment in Beijing suburbs, which can fulfill almost all the tastes and needs of children.
The Kid Nation Hall is divided into two floors. The most distinctive and attractive points of the first floor are the simulated rainforest hall and caves. In this simulated rainforest, children’s exploration of nature will be inspired by playing freely in the rainforest. Climbing the eye-catching rainbow stairs, the second floor with a different style will be presented to us. Children can read some interesting books in the reading room, make some cute handicrafts by themselves in the handicraft classroom, and even can have a special dining experience in the rainforest restaurant.
Yongshun Dye House was built in 1900. Nowadays it is a name brand of Gubei Water Town. In Yongshun Dye House, what strikes people most is the drying yard. The high hanging cotton cloths, with bright red and green colors or simple and elegant blue and white colors, are all fluttering gently with the breeze. Moreover, there is a small exhibition in the dye house. It gives a comprehensive introduction to textile and printing and dyeing, especially the basic knowledge and main processes of printing and dyeing. Besides, visitors can create their own DIY work under the guidance and help of the craftsmen.
Water Dance Theater of Gubei Water Town, actually a pool with a length of 13 meters and with a width of 11 meters in front of Wangjing Tower, is known for its magnificent musical fountain. In such a 13-meter small pool, the movement of the water is perfectly combined with the rhythm of the music. The combination of cheerful music, dazzling lights, and the advanced projection technology turns Wangjing Tower into a magic tower, which keeps changing all kinds of gorgeous colors and even its shapes. It is an amazing magic performance. At present, it has become the indispensable part when travelers visit the town at night.
