China Railway Museum is the only national professional museum and public welfare cultural institution of railway. It is mainly set up to collect, store, and display cultural relics and scientific research achievements of railway. At the same time, it serves as a base for patriotic education and science popularization. The museum has three exhibition halls in different places in Beijing: Zhengyangmen Hall, Dongjiao Hall, and Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall.
Zhengyangmen Hall is the main hall of China Railway Museum. It was rebuilt from the former Zhengyangmen East Station and opened in 2010. There are five kinds of displays in Zhengyangmen Hall, where a large number of detailed and vivid pictures and historical materials comprehensively show the history of China’s railway development.
Dongjiao Hall is a large exhibition hall consisting of three parts: locomotive and train exhibition, comprehensive exhibition, and special exhibition. There are eight visiting routes according to different ballast bed structures and various sleeper forms. The locomotive and train exhibition hall displays 125 trains in different periods.
Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall is established to commemorate China’s great railway engineer Zhan Tianyou. It is a national third-class museum, a national popular science education base, and a Beijing patriotism education base. The memorial hall mainly introduces the outstanding achievements of Zhan Tianyou and displays the instruments and seals used by him.
In 1978, the Science and Technology Museum of the Ministry of Railways of the People’s Republic of China was established.
In 1987, Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall was opened to the public.
In 1991, China Railway Museum was proposed to be built.
In 2002, Dongjiao Hall was opened to the public in part.
In 2003, the Science and Technology Museum was renamed China Railway Museum.
In 2009, China Railway Museum and Beijing Railway Museum were integrated into the new China Railway Museum.
In 2010, Zhengyangmen Hall was opened to the public.

Building Function: The memorial hall was built to commemorate the great railway engineer Zhan Tianyou of China.
The large clock hands were used in the bell tower of Beijing Railway Station, one of the top ten buildings in Beijing. Although the clock hands have gone through hardships, they are still in good condition. In 2008, they were removed from Beijing Railway Station and are collected in China Railway Museum (Zhengyangmen Hall) now.
Mao Zedong’s Train is a historic relic with important memorial significance, which is displayed in China Railway Museum (Dongjiao Hall). In 1946, workers in Harbin locomotive depot overcame many difficulties and repaired a scrapped train which was named Mao Zedong’s Train in 1946. It is 21.9 meters long and its speed can reach 80 kilometers per hour.
The vertical scroll is a birthday gift for Zhan Tianyou, which was written by Lu Runxiang, a famous scholar in the late Qing Dynasty(1840-1912). It mainly praises Zhan Tianyou’s life achievements and noble morality and is collected in China Railway Museum (Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall).
In 1910, Zhan Tianyou successfully built Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway. As a result, he won a seal carved with the words “Gong Ke Jin Shi” (successful scholars in engineer and technology) without an examination, showcasing his outstanding contributions.
